Yes, yes, we know - we’re always plugging sunscreen on the site. But for excellent reasons - as well as the health implications, going unprotected in the sun will play havoc with your looks.
How’s this for a statistic: up to 90% of visible ageing is caused by sun exposure. 90%! Now, it took the appearance of a manky big sun spot on my face for me to wise up - but you don’t need to make the same mistake.
To encourage us to wear the stuff, we need a daily sunscreen that looks good under makeup and won’t clog pores, cause breakouts or irritate our skin. Tall order? Not for this fab five ...
La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF 30, €17.50
Ideal for combination, oily or acne prone skin, this has a lovely lightweight texture and absorbs fast to a dry touch, matte finish. It spreads easily over skin, absorbing shine and won’t block pores or cause breakouts. And as you’d expect from the sensitive skin experts at La Roche Posay, this is fragrance and paraben-free too.
Vichy Capital Soleil Mattifying Face Fluid SPF 50, €14.50

Another brilliant pick for combination or oily skintypes, the higher SPF should also appeal to paler skin-types or people who burn easily. As the name suggests, this has an instant mattifying, anti-shine effect on the skin. We're big fans of this one.
SkinCeuticals Brightening UV Defense SPF 30, €39.00
Suitable for all skin types, this is designed to protect and correct. The formula provides daily sun protection while brightening the skintone. While I’d still use a separate moisturiser this one is more hydrating than most – up to 12 hours is the claim. It’s out from the 1st of next month.
RoC Soleil Protexion+ 2in1 Anti-Brown Spot Fluid 50+, €18.25
Launched this spring, this is billed as the next generation of sun protection - combining a high SPF (50) with skin care benefits, to tackle existing patches of pigmentation and prevent new ones. The formula is lightweight and contains skin friendly ingredients like Vitamin C.
Hamilton Everyday Face, €12.50
Advertised
Australian brand Hamilton offers a lightweight formula with a subtle tint and a matte finish. It’s non-comedogenic so suitable for oily or acne prone skin as well as those with a history of sensitivity to sun protection products. Well priced, too, for the quality of the product.
Now let's just hope we get another chance to use the stuff! Any other gems out there? Share 'em in the comments!
