It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for ages, having first written about it away back in 2008, but last Saturday I finally got up off my ass and went and had my eyelashes permed. The catalyst was my sister, who decided on a whim to get hers done and wanted a partner in crime.
Well, I say she wanted a partner in crime but she might just have decided not to go it alone so that if her eyelashes were to fall out or something post-perm, at least she wouldn’t be the only gay eyelash-less lass in the village.
As it happened, she ended up getting hers done first, so I was able to have a goo at them before my own treatment. Neither of us were wildly impressed, although they did look subtly curled and that was even more obvious with a lick of mascara. To be on the safe side, though, when my turn rocked around I made sure to emphasise to my therapist that I wasn’t too worried about a natural effect; instead, I wanted a very, very definite and noticeable curl.

Once I’d taken out my contacts and my eye area had been cleansed, a sticky mini-roller was lined up on my eyelid right along the base of my lashes, which were then gently pushed onto the roller using some additional glue to hold them in a curled position. Perming lotion was applied and left on for 10 minutes, during which time I managed to ignore the disgusting rotten egg smell of the lotion and had a nice little snooze, then it was removed and a setting lotion took its place, which was left on for a further 15 minutes.
I was left with a pronounced curl that didn't look OTT - no crazy total bendback of the lashes into the crease of my eyelid - and that really made the most of my own lashes, which are a decent length but so straight naturally that they nearly point to the floor. I'll let you know how well it lasts!
