New Balls Please: Channel Jennifer Lawrence As Preppy Wimbledon Style Takes Centre Court
Anyone for tennis? No? Perhaps a little tennis-inspired fashion then? Ah, now I have your attention.
Not only do we have the start of Wimbledon to inspire our tennis attire, several designers have looked to the south London postcode of SW19 for inspiration. Victoria Beckham is the leader of the tennis tournament this year. Her Spring/Summer collection was filled with flirty short skirts and monochrome pleated dresses translating a traditionally sporty style into high fashion. All you need is the racquet, lawn court and Rafa Nadal on your arm. Yes, please.
The main colour is white, a huge trend for this season. If you want to don the head to toe white ensemble, there are a couple of things to bear in mind. White isn’t exactly the most practical colour (for obvious reasons) and it can sometimes look a little harsh, so experiment with statement shoes and accessories. I love this look on actress Jaime Winstone; it’s fresh and easy to wear thanks to her floral shoes and cerise pink bag.

Alternatively Jennifer Lawrence has opted for separates, which are the most versatile option as you can re-style them to create lots of different outfits over the summer months. If you prefer trousers, you can swap the skirt for white cropped pants - wide leg culottes or tapered cigarette pants are equally as fabulous.
The tennis trend also likes a little colour thanks to Alexander Wang, Tommy Hilfiger and Rag & Bone. So if your tennis club allows colour (unlike the championship at Wimbledon) add some bright shades like burned orange, which effortlessly complements a subtle pattern. Heels are not mandatory thank goodness, and tennis shoes are a-plenty this season. All the above outfits will work with Converse-style sneakers which are on trend and most importantly, comfortable.
Personally, I quite like the “umpire” look so I’ve become partial to some skinny white jeans, t-shirts and blazers. It’s a “go-to” look that’s not preppy, just stylish. Take a look at the umpires at Wimbledon who are dressed by Ralph Lauren every year. I’m not jealous. At all.
That said, the key to tennis-chic is not to overdo the trend; you just have to pay tribute to it. So pour your Pimms, wash your strawberries, and pretend your Maria Sharapova for a season.
Are you a fan of preppy tennis style? Will you be picking up any whites this season? And who will you be supporting in the tennis (we're Team Rafa's Left Arm)?
