A Hermés Birkin just sold for the same price as a Goddamn house
THIS is how the 1% live. Someone just paid €335,898 for a handbag. A Himalayan Hermés Birkin, but still, a handbag.
When you live in a country where families live in cars parked beside cemeteries, this is upsetting news. While we appreciate a good handbag, we really do, paying the price of a house for one is beyond extravagant. But if you've got the cash to spare, why would you buy a bungalow in Castlebar, Co. Mayo, when you can buy an Hermés Birkin?
Perhaps it could be described as art. The Himalayan bag is made of matte crocodile skin, its handles decorated with 205 diamonds and 18-karat gold buckles. According to Elle UK, the Himalayan Hermés Birkin gets its name from the way the bag's colour fades. Over time, it transforms from a smoky grey to pearly white, just like the mountain range we'll never see because in the eyes of the people who bid for €335,898 handbags, we're paupers.
There it is now.

Birkins, named after the actress Jane Birkin, are among the most coveted bags in the world; it's the Rolls Royce of bags. An A-list fave, all the Kardashians have one, and despite its price and status, it's the perfect everyday carry-all. Ashlee Simpson even uses hers as a gym bag!
The bag went under the hammer in Hong Kong in an auction held by Christie's. Is it everything you thought a 1% Hermés Birkin bag would be?
