The beret is back and it's a micro-trend you'll want to embrace
Forget the French stereotypes and the 1990s incarnation. The beret is back and it will make your autumn outfits
Autumn. It is the chicest of months. In Ireland, it is very hard to resist stripping off when the sun shines, and sadly, this means style suffers. Autumn, however, presents the opportunity to wear our nicest things, before it gets too cold (then all we want to wear are jumpers). A little micro-trend has arrived this September to tie our looks together. Welcome back, Monsieur Beret.
Dior's Maria Grazia Chiuri kicked off the trend during a/w 17 Fashion Week and muse Winne Harlow wore her's off the catwalk (and into our hearts).
The beret can easily fall into cheesy I-want-to-dress-like-a-French-girl territory, so definitely don't wear yours with a striped top and a baguette. If you wear with a wool wrap coat you may end up looking like you dressed up as Faye Dunaway as Bonnie in Bonnie and Clyde, but that's not a bad thing.
For some, the beret does not symbolise 'French'; it's the sartorial symbol of revolution. Che Guevara, the Black Panthers, the original Beatniks - their beret topped heads will forever be associated with rebellion. Some of you may remember Samuel L. Jackson never taking his Kangol beret (turned backwards) off his head in the 1990s. That's ok to channel, too. In fact, we encourage it. Be your best Samuel this autumn. Or, take your beret instructions from Prince, and wear a raspberry one.
