Viva Forever! Or maybe not. Has Victoria fallen out with her fellow Spices?
Part of my Christmas viewing over the holidays was a documentary that charted the early days and rise of the Spice Girls, as well as taking a look at the preparations for Viva Forever, the West End musical based on their songs. It was a great insight into the early days of the band, when they were ambitious, fresh faced teenagers in belly tops, bent on taking over the pop charts and revealed facts like how Sporty Spice and Ginger Spice were almost dubbed Scouse Spice and Saucy Spice instead.
I have to admit, when they first burst onto the scene in the Nineties in a flurry of big hair and platform shoes, I absolutely loved them and might have cried a tiny bit at the end of the documentary when it showed the girls welling up during a rehearsal of “Goodbye”. They were brash and fun and their performance at the 1997 Brit Awards (when Geri stole the show in THAT Union flag dress) was the most exciting thing EVER to thirteen year old me.
However, while the documentary showed Emma Bunton admitting that no one would ever know her as well as the other Spices do, and generally talking about how close they all are, there was a very visible split in the group on opening night of the musical. While Mel B, Mel C, Emma and Geri arrived together, sat together and were photographed as a group, Victoria seemed to keep her distance, arriving and sitting separately with David and their boys.

It seems that there had been rumours of another Spice Girls reunion tour, but apparently Victoria didn’t want to play ball, leading to a rift between her and Geri, so any plans for a tour have now been scuppered. I suppose on one hand, Victoria is probably the busiest and most successful of the Spice Girls, what with her ridiculously good-looking family, her clothing line and general world domination, so if anyone was going to back out of a reunion tour, it’d be her.
So, were you a Spice Girls fan the first time around? Would you go to a reunion tour if it did happen again? And what did you make of Victoria’s distance from the group at the premiere?
