There were once only two hygiene products available for periods; pads or tampons. Now there is a whole range of budget and eco-friendly options.

One of these products is a menstrual cup, here is all you need to know:

What is a menstrual cup?

Menstrual cups aren't a new phenomenon, they have actually been around since the 1980s but weren't widely used due mostly to their uncomfortable design.

A menstrual cup is a silicone cup that is inserted inside the vagina and catches the flow of menstrual blood. They need to be emptied 2-3 times a day.

What are the benefits?

They are better for the environment

One menstrual will last you ten years. If you compare this with how many tampons or pads you would go through each month it's obvious which produces more waste.

They are safer

Menstrual cups aren't associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome, unlike tampons. While this is rare, it is nice not to have the worry at all.

They are kinder to your vagina

Menstrual cups aren't drying to your vagina, this preserves healthy bacteria and protects against infections.

They are hygienic

Despite what you might think they are actually more hygienic than pads. Menstrual fluid develops an odor when exposed to air, the cups eliminate this issue.

They may prevent cramps

Lots of women report having less severe cramps when using menstrual cups, while no clinical studies have been performed to support this it is still worth noting.

How do I choose one?

There are several different brands that may have slightly different sizing but in general, there is one for if you have had a vaginal birth and one if you haven't.

They might seem scary to begin with but are not as prone to leaking as they look. Inserting one gets easier over time and it never hurts to give something new a try, especially if it ends up working for you.
