If you suffer from psoriasis you will know, you would try anything to relieve some of its symptoms.

Psoriasis is a common, genetic inflammatory disease. Its symptoms are raised itchy patches of red skin which is covered with silver scale-like skin.

Psoriasis is most commonly found on the elbows, knees and scalp but can also any part of the skin. Many fear psoriasis may be infectious, but it is not an infection and therefore not contagious.

There is no cure for psoriasis but there are different ways you can manage symptoms. Always chat to your GP before trying any herbal remedies in case there is a reaction to regular medication you may be on.

Some herbal remedies may not be used during pregnancy so always check with your GP beforehand.

Here are some common natural remedies for psoriasis relief:

Some research shows that Aloe Vera has been known to help reduce redness and the dryness associated with psoriasis. Any cream containing Aloe Vera should contain 0.5% Aloe and it can be applied up to three times daily.

Seaweed

Another solution known to remove dead skin cells and the scaley aspect of psoriasis is to add some seaweed or some Epson salts to your bath. Use only warm water and soak for 15mins. To avoid drying it out any further apply moisturiser while damp after bathing.

Porridge Oats

Although there is no scientific evidence to support that porridge oats have an effect on psoriasis, we know the benefits oats can give the skin. Fill a bath of warm water, add a cup of oats wrapped and tied in a muslin cloth. Soak in it for 15 mins and again apply moisturizer.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can be effective in helping to relieve the itch from psoriasis. Always go with organic ACV which you can get from most health food shops or pharmacies. Always mix it with water before you apply it to the skin. Mix it at a ratio of 1:1. It can be used directly onto patches of psoriasis or onto the scalp to relieve the itch. Do not use if any of your psoriasis is cracked or bleeding or if you have any other open wounds as it may cause irritation.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a staple to have in any home. It has antiseptic qualities and can be applied directly to the skin. Using a shampoo containing tea tree oil can be beneficial to you if you have psoriasis on the scalp.
