Toni & Guy Casual Sea Salt Texturing Spray review

Of all the not-my-own types of hair that I wish lived on top of my head, the one I covet the most is relaxed, tousled, natural-looking waves in the style of Blake Lively/Sienna Miller. They're a bit beachy, a bit boho, and, as far as I can see, appropriate for every occasion ever. Unfortunately, they're also something I've never really managed to execute very successfully without spending hours on end slaving over a hot GHD, curling tongs, or wand and even then the resultant kinks only really look as desired after I've slept on them.

Two day's work for natural-looking waviness is a bit much, like.

So I recently picked up a travel-sized bottle of Toni & Guy Casual Sea Salt Texturing Spray in my local Boots, hoping that it could simplify proceedings. Suitable for all hair types, it's a products that claims to help create texture, body, and light hold, making it perfect for effortlessly creating a laid-back, lived-in, beachy look. It can be used on towel dried or dry hair, and, according to the instructions, should be sprayed from root to tip and worked through with fingers to form tousled waves with natural movement.

Well, as usual I couldn't wait to try out my Latest Brand New Thing. As soon as I got it home, I tried the spray on dry hair, and while it certainly added some fresh-from-the-sea texture it mostly just made everything look a bit limp and greasy.

Eh, EW.

I got better results when I used it on towel-dried hair. I used a wide toothed comb to detangle and part my hair, and then spritzed the spray onto it in sections from mid-lengths to ends. After a bit of experimenting with twisting or rubbing it through strands, I discovered that gently scrunching it through my hair produced optimum results (not too enthusiastically though; the first time I tried it I went to town with the scrunching action and wound up with a halo of messy fuzz.)

Now, even at its best, this Toni & Guy spray gives me a very low-key result. It does not – sadly, if unsurprisingly – provide me with Blake Lively-esque hair, but gives my poker straight locks more of a slightly mussy, kinky, texturised, look with a light hold. It looks cool alright, but in more of a mild bedhead way than any sort of proper wave.

Ah well. My search continues!
