Tried and Tested: Urban Decay x Jean-Michel Basquiat Collection
By Sarah Jane Lanagan  | Jun 16, 2017

Urban Decay mix art and makeup with their latest collection - a collaboration with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. And the Urban Decay x Jean-Michel Basquiat collection is simply amazing.

With the brand new Urban Decay boutique opening next week on Grafton St, we thought it was the perfect time to check out their collaboration with the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Known for his creative street art and unique use of mixed media, Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to fame in the New York art scene during the 1980s alongside peers such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.

His work often clashes dark, earthy hues with pops of gold or intense colours such as acid green or pink. This juxtaposition is something you see coming through in the collaboration with Urban Decay. It makes for an interesting, limited edition collection that stands out from the norm.

Before we get into talking about the products though, we should take a moment to appreciate how amazing the packaging is. The palettes are a work of art in their own right. Which, is why Urban Decay have included a little hook in the back of them, so you can hang them up after you've used up the shadows! It's a really nice touch.

Now, on to the products...
The Urban Decay x Jean-Michel Basquiat collection is is based around three core palettes:

  • Gold Griot €42
This houses eight silky smooth shadows in earthy shades with both matte and shimmer finishes. It's ideal everyday wear but offers enough variety to create dramatic evening looks too.
  • Tenant €42
Also featuring eight shades, Tenant is the palette to go for if you are feeling adventurous. We're always drawn to vibrant shades, especially ones like 1960 (pink) and Boom (peacock green). But the deep emerald green of Grafitti and rich purple Neo are equally as striking.

  • Gallery Blush Palette €31
We love this four-pan palette the or face. In it, you'll find three matte shades and one shimmer (which will double up as a gorgeous highlighter).
To round out the Urban Decay collaboration with Jean Michel Basquiat there are also some pretty pink and neutral lip colors (€20) complete with limited edition packaging. Along with the palettes, there are three highly pigmented 24/7 Glide-on eye pencils (€20). We love the unexpected shades of these which include a brick/brown (Anatomy), a chartreuse green (Post Punk) and a beautiful sky blue (Vivid).
