Milia are small white bumps that are on the surface of the skin. Most commonly found on the face. They appear usually in clusters under the eyes, on the nose cheeks and chin.

They can appear on other parts of the body. They appear usually when keratin builds up and gets trapped.

Although not usually painful or harmful most like to find easy ways to get rid of them. It is not all that difficult either.

Cleanse

As simple as this sounds, make sure you are washing your face daily. Make sure to use a paraben-free soap. Using anything stronger may strip away the oils your skin needs to stay healthy.

Steam

If you have problems with large pores it could also be irritants causing excess milia. After cleansing, try steaming your face to clear out any remaining irritants from your pores. A quick and easy way to do this is to let your shower run hot and sit in the room for 5-10mins. After, pat your face dry and rinse to remove any irritants before leaving the bathroom.

Exfoliate

Regular gentle exfoliation will help to keep your skin irritant-free. Over exfoliating can irritate the skin so don’t do it every day. Do it once a week to start and then twice a week. You will soon see if it is riding your face of milia. Look for exfoliators with salicylic acid or glycolic acid.

Honey Mask

Manuka honey can reduce inflammation so a regular manuka honey mask may very well help your milia. Be sure to use manuka honey and not commercial honey as manuka contains properties that commercial honey doesn’t.

To make a honey mask: pop some honey in a bowl, add some cinnamon (optional) and pop in the microwave for 30 seconds. Leave on for about 10 mins.

When should I see a dermatologist?

Most milia outbreaks will resolve themselves after a few weeks. If they don’t resolve or you find you are regularly getting milia it might be a good idea to get some professional advice. A dermatologist in some cases can use a small needle to remove the milia manually.
