Have you been thinking of getting the popular skincare treatment micro-needling? Well here's everything you need to know about it.

Microneedling (also called derma-rolling) has actually been around for a few years as a popular skincare treatment among celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Kim Kardashian.

Kim Kardashian famously got a 'vampire facial' which involves micro-needling.

The treatment has moved its way into everyday skincare recently with the derma-roller tool (used in the treatment) now being made for everyday use.

What is micro-needling?

It is a procedure which involves hundreds of tiny holes puncturing the top layer of the skin.

Don't worry it's not as painful as you might think.

This is done by using a tool called a derma-roller which is a small roller that has tiny needles on it.

The needles on derma-rollers for at-home use are 0.3mm or smaller, however, professionals use derma-rollers with needles varying from 0.5mm to 2mm.

The benefits of micro-needling

You may be wondering why anyone would voluntarily have needles prick their face, well here's why:

  1. Encourages the skin to naturally produce collagen and elastin.
  2. Promotes increased absorption of skincare products.
  3. Helps to even skin texture by reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scarring.
  4. Leaves you with a glowing complexion.

It's important to note that derma-rollers designed for at-home use often do not provide all of these benefits as these needles are smaller than the ones found on the professional tool.

Risks of at-home treatment

Although the idea of being able to save some money and do this treatment yourself may sound great you need to be careful.

If you have skin irritation, eczema, active acne or rosacea you should not try micro-needling.

Before purchasing your own derma-roller for at-home use you should consult a dermatologist to ensure that micro-needling is suitable for your skin.

If you do decide to try it yourself make sure the derma-roller is sterilised before and after use.

The roller should be replaced after 40-50 uses or if any needles are dull or bent as continued use could cause infection or scarring.

Getting this treatment done professionally can be expensive and will cost you a couple of hundred euro, however, if you're truly interested in the treatment it's best to get it done professionally first.

Then if you wish to try derma-rolling yourself your dermatologist will be able to tell you the best method to use.
