Dry scalp and how to manage it
Dry scalp can be a painful and irritating condition, the main symptoms being a flakey scalp and an itch.
Dry scalp is caused when your skin is dehydrated or does not have enough moisture. Because of this lack of moisture, the skin on your scalp becomes dry and irritated and flakes off.
If you suffer from dry skin on other parts of your body or any skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema, it is likely you will suffer from dry scalp too.
Another trigger for dry scalp could be contact dermatitis. This is usually caused by a reaction to a product you may be using like shampoo, hair spray or even hair gel.
Other times there is no real reason or solution to your dry scalp but you can make it more manageable:
Scalp massage
One of the most effective treatments for dry scalp is massage. It is super easy and you can even do it yourself. When you are washing your hair, massage your scalp with your fingertips in gentle circular movements.

Massaging your scalp can help to stimulate the natural production of oils and encourage more blood flow to the follicles which in turn will help them to receive more nutrients.
You can also use lukewarm natural oils to massage. Not only is this relaxing and a great way to practice some self-care, but natural oils also work as a soothing agent for your scalp as they are anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial.
Tea tree oil is a great one to start with. It has countless benefits including anti-bacterial and anti-septic properties. However, it should never be applied directly to the scalp. Dilute it with some coconut oil and it can be used all over the scalp. You can also add a tea tree oil to your shampoo to get extra benefits from it.
Diet
A poor diet can also be a contributing factor for dry scalp. Key nutrients you should be eating a balance of every day include Zinc, Omega 3 and Vitamin A.
Drink up
It's no secret that water is one of the most important factors for your overall health and well-being. But did you know that not drinking enough water can be a major cause of dry scalp?
Aim for your 8 glasses a day with more if you are active or it is a hot day.
