The Aran Jumper is officially an icon of style
Of course, it is. We've been saying it for years! The Aran Jumper joins Levis, the Breton top and the LBD in a major fashion exhibition.
111 of the world's most iconic style pieces from the past 100 years will feature in 'Items: Is Fashion Modern?' at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. The Aran Jumper, borrowed from the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Co Mayo, is being prepped for the exhibition opening in October.
According to the MoMA, each of the 111 items in the exhibition were chosen because they have had a “profound impact on the world over the last century”.
The cream jumper was created in 1940, made from scoured wool. Arans typically feature four - six 4–6 texture patterns; this jumper has two, one on the front, one for the back.

In the Irish Times today, manager of the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life said,“Aran sweaters are a powerful expression of the creativity of the Irish folk craft tradition, and we are very happy that this is being recognised through inclusion in this important exhibition.
“Through their association with the Irish folk singers, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, they achieved huge international popularity and were worn by celebrities such as Steve McQueen and Grace Kelly.”
Aran jumpers have been around for centuries, worn to protect against the elements - even rain. Because of its popularity in pop culture, it was chosen with the other items in the exhibition, because all of them have had a “profound impact on the world over the last century”. Thanks, Steve McQueen. Thanks, Grace Kelly.
The exhibition will be held in MoMA from October 1st until January 28th, 2018.
