Top Three Weight Loss Myths Debunked!

You may remember Simone, and the start of her journey to health that she shared with us last year as part of the Gym Virgin Diaries series. Well, she checked in with us recently to let us know that she’s still working away on achieving her goals.

And she wanted to share some insights with us that she’s learned from Dave Peelo, owner of Metabolic Fitness on Drury St. and Simone’s new trainer.

Welcome back Simone!

Hi Ladies! It’s good to be back! We’ve all seen fitness crazes come and go, haven’t we? My new regime is not a fad so I wanted to fill you in on what it’s about. I started off my new nutritional plan and training regime 6 weeks ago and the results already are really noticeable. As well as visible fat loss, I’ve buckets more energy, I’m in better mood and I’m sleeping better.

I asked Dave to give me the top three most commonly held misconceptions about weight loss a here’s what he had to say:

1. It’s not a Diet it’s a Lifestyle:

'We don't like the word diet because the word suggests something temporary. Rather, what we would hope for you to achieve is a sustainable way of eating which coupled with training will get you in shape and stay there forever.  Depriving yourself is not sustainable'.

2. Weight Training Does Not Make Women Bulky

'I’ve trained women of all shapes and sizes for almost 15 years, weight training does not make you bulky or masculine. It all ultimately comes down to hormones. Most women simply do not possess the necessary level of testosterone to build a bulky physique. It’s actually quite hard to gain muscle. What does occur is a change in body shape coupled with more muscle tone and firmness'.

3. Completely Avoiding Carbs and Choosing Low-Fat Foods is Not the Answer:

'There’s a lot of mixed information out there when it comes to how you should eat to get in shape. Cutting out macro nutrients be it fats, protein or carbohydrates for prolonged periods or going on super low calorie diets will always have a yo-yo effect.

Nourishing your body, not depriving it, learning what types of food to eat and when is the optimal time to eat them is a major part of controlling your energy, mood and body shape. This is what we place a large emphasis on when advising clients'.

Having a trainer who gives me these kind of tips (as well as putting me through killer workouts) is really keeping me on track. I find the camaraderie in the female group class fantastic. See, being an all female environment it’s very supportive and a lot of fun.  I’m working out harder than ever before but despite that I’m still enjoying it. The team in Metabolic Fitness are so welcoming and supportive, and more importantly are experts in their field (and they offer both personal training and small group classes). It definitely gets a big thumbs up from me! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve some running and funning to attend to.

Do you have any other myths to bust or tips to share? We'd love to hear them!

The good news is that Metabolic Fitness run regular six week courses, the next one is starting at the beginning of April. Visit metabolicfitness.ie, email [email protected] or call 087 934 3454 for more info.
