Dewy skin just says summer. At this time of year, we generally ditch the matte foundation in favour of sheerer, moister and more light reflective formulations.
Applying powder over this sort of foundation can ruin the look - the same goes for powder blusher. Applying powder blusher to an unpowdered, dewy base will cause the blush to catch and apply patchily. This is why cream blush is a better option for summer skin. It also looks great and gives the cheeks a radiant glow, without the glitter, that no powder blush can mimic. It is also the best lazy option - cream blush always looks best applied with fingers and can be patted on in a few seconds- so you can leave makeup brushes in the drawer!
There are several excellent, high quality blush options from high to low end on the market. Here are five:
- Chanel le Blush Creme de Chanel (€34)
A pretty recent addition to Chanel's repertoire, this oil-free blush comes in a beautiful compact and dries to a satin-matte finish.
With eight shades in the range, there's one to suit absolutely everyone. This is a feel-good, luxury buy, but the lasting power and opacity of the blush speak for themselves. You really can't lose with this one!
- Nars Cream Blush (€30)
This velvety offering from Nars is great for a sheer wash of rich colour. The drawback with these is that there are only four shades in the range. However, even among these four, there is something for everyone from fairest to darkest complexioned.
Apply with fingers over a dewy foundation for a natural looking flush of summer colour.
- Mac Cremeblend Blush (€23)

Mac is adored by Irish women, so it simply wouldn't be right to leave it out of this list.
Mac's cream blush comes in five shades, all of which are pink-based. There are brown and peachy pinks for those with sallower or deeper skin tones too. Highly pigmented and setting to a dewy finish rather than matte like the Chanel and Nars offerings, this blush is very easy to blend. Tap it onto the apples of your cheeks with fingers for a lovely natural finish.
- Maybelline Dream Soft Blush (€10.89)
This delectably creamy blush in Plum (pictured) is wonderful for fairer skins. It looks like a beautiful natural flush on the skin, wears well throughout the day, and has the expensive consistency of a much more high-end product.
Maybelline is an impressive brand for lip and eye products, but can sometimes be a little patchy when it comes to products for the face. This blush, though, is a winner.
- Bourjois Little Round Pot Cream Blush (€10.49)
There was much excitement when Bourjois released a cream version of their iconic Little Round Pot Blush, and it hasn't been a disappointment.
Like the Chanel offering, this is a cream-to-powder formula that will dry matte and stay put all day. The Little Round Pot Cream Blush is only available in four shades for the moment, but the formulation feels really expensive.
Now that'll put a bit of colour in your cheeks.
