The top three cult beauty products we just don't get

We have all tried them at least once in our lives, and they seem to be on most bathroom shelves, but for me, having tried and tested them on more than one occasion, I just don't get them.

Let me start with this cult favourite:

  • Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Cream

This product for me has always been baffling to me, or that of extremely good marketing. Usually with a cult product, they seem to do what they say on the tin. This all in one "wonder product" is supposed to rehydrate skin, nails, add glow to the face and even shape eyebrows? With an ingredient list like this, my thoughts are confirmed.

Petrolatum 56.8%, Lanolin, Mineral Oil, Fragrance, Salicylic Acid, Propylparaben, Castor Oil, Corn Oil, Tocopherol, BHT, Iron Oxides.

This product is less than useful, with the first listed ingredients (which means the majority of the product) being petrolatum, Lanolin, Mineral oil - which are all cheap bulking agents - and fragrance, which can actually imbalance your hormone levels and lead to skin diseases and disorders such as adult acne.

  • Bio Oil

Can I just point something out, any product which claims to reduce the appearance of stretch marks or reduce the appearance of scarring that has no retinol A in it will not work. Though there are ways to minimize the appearance of scars, there is no way to remove them entirely

Human skin is made up of three main layers, the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. Scar tissue occurs in your dermis which is the second layer of your skin so in order to reduce it you need to get right down into the dermis to rejuvenate it. Retinol will do this, among other dermatologist machinery techniques like microdermabrasion, micro needling, Fraxel to name a few.

But a topical oil certainly will not.

  • Maybelline Mascara

For me, I just don't understand this product. I actually bought it not so long ago, remembering how great I used think it was. I was in a chemist and in need of a new mascara, but when I used it, I realised since it's launch in the 1960s, there have been countless improvements to mascaras in general, and this one not only left my lashes clumping together but also gave a strange tint of gray-black, not to mention the dark residue it left under my eyes. And I can't even tell you how little I need anything adding to my current dark circle.
