Bord of Your Hair? Fancy a Snip Nua?

hair trends

Last week's report from the interestingly-named An Bord Snip Nua* put a thought or two into my head. One was a panicked "Oh feck, we're all shagged," and the second one was "wahhey! I'll get a hairdressing pun-related post out of that!"

It's arguably more Beaut.ie than beauracratic, so lets ignore the hairy issues of politics and instead concentrate on the more agreeable issue of our barnets. I fancy a bit of a change, (in leadership as well as in hairstyle), and have been having a gander at what's new in hair. Since it's summer, beachy, surfy waves are an obvious go-to, but for Autum 09 and Winter 10, you might be glad (or, eh, not) to know that grunge is making a comback on the catwalks.

So, for the new season, think skewiff braids (milkmaid and plaits), backcombing and lots of length and tousled textures. Sleek, over-groomed hair is definitely O-U-T, and being a bit more creative with your combover is definitely in. Pile it up or wear it down, the key seems to be that Olsen Twin fave: looking like you didn't try too hard. Which of course, is usually pretty bloody difficult and involves the usage of much salt or surf spray, along with a lot of judicious teasing.

I'm predicting that short hair is going to be huge again: but think Coco Chanel, rather than Posh Spice. The imminent launch of Coco Avant Chanel will no doubt see gals the nation over rush to ape Audrey Tautou's portrayal of the Chic One - but be warned, this only suits a specific, elfin, face shape.

Another trend that's of note is the re-emergence of Debbie Harry-esque bleached, shaggy dos. Taylor Momsen brings it in Gossip Girl, and we can expect that rocktastic fad to grow longer legs with next year's release of The Runaways, the Joan Jett biopic. I love this - I always wanted a Debbie Harry do, but my nearly pitch-black, frizz prone mane couldn't pull it off.

I know what'd I'd go for if the opportunity arose, and I equally know what I hate. The one 'trend' I'd dearly like to see banished? Undercuts. As if it wasn't bad enough that Alice Dellal was sporting one for much of the last year, recently Rihanna's gotten on the bandwagon too. Ugh, is all I can say.

What about you? Feeling any forthcoming trends, and which ones do you think you could carry off?

*For non-Irish readers who are baffled by this, an Bord Snip Nua is the tongue-in-cheek term for a body who were appointed to look into cost-cutting in the public sector.
