Keep it hydrated

Even when youre only traveling a small distance, air traveling is extremely dehydrating for your skin.

There are a plethora of moisturisers you can use onboard but another way to ensure your skin stays hydrated is to drink lots of water on the flight.

Yes, that might mean lots of toilet breaks too but your skin will thank you for it later.

Remove Make-up

It is vital your skin is make up free while on a flight, to make sure it can stay as hydrated as possible.

The air on board a flight is very dry and it can make the skin stressed. Wearing your make up on board will only further dry out your skin.

You can always reapply before you land.

Wear a mask

We would recommend wearing a high hydration mask during the flight.

Either a sheet mask or cream. It will help you look fresh on arrival.

Pack an eye roller

Your eyes can also become victims of the dry air.

The can become puffy and dry quite easily.

Bring an eye roller and use it frequently. It will also give great relief for dry or tired eyes.

Cleanse your skin

Again the stale air can and does carry germs and bacteria from other passengers, none of which you want on your face.

This is why you should always cleanse your skin during a flight more than once, just before you land.

Dont forget your hands

When we think of the skin we often just focus on the face but your hands are just as important.

Your hands can get as dry and dehydrated as your face, quite quickly.

Bring some hand cream with you and apply it at regular intervals.

What about a balance between the two I do LOVE a good, tinted moisturiser! The glow-ier and dewier the better!

When you repeatedly find yourself out of pocket at the end of the month, with no payrise or rent decrease in sight, it may be time to reassess some things you spend money on that you may take for granted.

Think about how much you spend on booze ('just one more' in the pub does no one any favours), or magazines, or a gym membership.

You could also think about how to make some extra cash.

2. Sunburn

Yoga with Adriene

It wouldn't be a YouTube yoga list without Adriene Mishler, the queen of YouTube yoga. She has led this space for years and has slowly built up a following of almost 10 million subscribers. On that number alone, you know she must be good. Adriene has a yoga class on just about everything you can think of: vinyasa flows, strength workouts, post-workout wind downs, the list is long. As well as this she does annual 30-day challenges at the start of the year, which are available to do whenever suits you. She brings her humour, charm and of course her dog Benji to every class, making the minutes fly by. Instead of separating the classes into abilities, each class is designed to cater for everyone. Providing different options depending on your body's capabilities that day. If you're going to start with any YouTube yoga class, Adriene is the perfect introduction.

Yoga with Kassandra

Another great option is Yoga with Kassandra, with 1.5 million subscribers so far, she already has an impressive following. Kassandra comes across as likeable, easy-going and she clearly knows her stuff. Her tips on little extras you can be doing to get the most out of a pose are particularly insightful. Also, this channel is a really active one as she uploads new content every few days. Like Adriene, she has videos for all different abilities, but if you've been practising for a while and are looking for more intermediate classes, Yoga with Kassandra could be the next step. Her classes can be very active if you're looking for a workout, also if you practise with a block or straps, she factors these in too.

Arianna Elizabeth

Since Arianna Elizabeth started her channel just over a year ago, she's quickly become the YouTube yoga instructor to watch. Her library of content is huge considering the short amount of time she's been on the scene. Her calm and chilled approach means even the harder workouts seem way more manageable. If you're chasing the sensation of being in an actual yoga class, we highly recommend this channel. It feels like you're practising in the room with Arianna which is perfect if you want to get lost in a flow. Light a candle or diffuse some essential oils for one of these classes.

Ashley Freeman

If you haven't heard of Ashley Freeman's channel, we're delighted to introduce you. Ashley is a personal trainer and yoga instructor based in Australia and she has some lovely yoga classes on her channel. She manages to mix challenging sequences with meditation to create classes that leave you feeling revitalised and connected to your body and nature. There aren't a huge amount of videos on her channel as she took time out to have a baby, but quality over quantity is what you should focus on here. Ashley has clearly put a lot of thought into her classes and it really shines through. You can also follow her on Instagram where she's been uploading workout videos too. Pre warning though - you will get envious when you see her stunning backdrop out in nature.

Cat Meffan

If you're after a yoga workout that's going to leave you strong and toned, Cat Meffan's channel is the YouTube yoga channel for you. Her sequences use many different parts of the body, which is key in yoga so you're not working the same few muscles over and over. There are plenty of videos if you're looking for a more chilled out practice too, but if you are going for a workout, be warned that they can be very fast sequences. Luckily with YouTube yoga, you're free to take breaks and pause the video as often as you need. Hallelujah for technology!

Shona Vertue

Another great channel to check out is Shona Vertue. Like Cat, Shona blurs the lines between yoga and a workout. So if you're wanting to build up some muscle, her channel is a good one to try. While she hasn't got the same amount of videos as Adriene or Kassandra, she makes up for that with the wide range of classes to choose from. From core workouts to hip openers and wrist work. There are even mini videos explaining individual poses. Some of her videos have "bits" at the start, which you may or may not be into, but do stay on for the sequences as they are worth it.

Annie Clarke

Are you all about mindfulness yoga and getting in the right head space? If so, Annie Clarke's YouTube yoga channel is perfect. Her sequences revolve around getting a physical workout alongside meditative moments to take stock and tune into the body. If you want to commit to yoga in the long term, learning to relax and appreciate stillness is key. Annie has also done "yoga journeys". These are similar to Adriene's challenges, where you return to her channel to complete a sequence each day for a certain amount of days or weeks. Random yoga sequences are great as you can pick the sequence to suit your mood, but journeys have been planned out to work on different parts of the body over time, which is extremely beneficial. Another great thing about YouTube yoga is that you don't have to complete a 30 day challenge in 30 days, so the pressure is completely off.

It's important to note that in a physical class, an instructor can check that you're doing the poses correctly. So if you have access to both in person and online classes, a mix of both would be ideal.

Trying to get our skin into tip-top health can feel like a never-ending challenge. From looking after what we are putting on our skin to looking at what we are putting in our body. However, for women, there's also the matter of your monthly cycle to contend with, which can have much more of an impact than you might think on your skin's overall health.

Skincare expert Eavanna Breen is here to enlighten us on just how important it is to be mindful of your cycle when caring for your skin. Below, Eavanna answers our questions on everything from what skin types are impacted the most by their cycle to how effective supplements, like Cleanmarine For Women, are on your skin's health.

B: So first things first Eavanna, overall how does your cycle affect the health of your skin?

E: During the menstrual cycle, the brain, ovaries, and uterus work together and communicate through hormones. Oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are the hormones that fluctuate during menstruation and affect the epidermis's characteristics (the outermost layer of your skin). Oestrogen can increase skin thickness and dermal water content, improve skin barrier function, enhance wound healing and affects fat deposition. Collagen content, skin pigmentation, and UV susceptibility are also influenced by oestrogen.

During cycle days 1-6, day one being the start of your period, hormone levels are low, so there is less stimulation of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in the skin during this time.

Cycle days 7-15: Oestrogen levels start to increase, stimulating cell turnover, which is when you will look and feel your best.

Cycle days 16-28: There is progesterone dominance which causes the stimulation of the oil glands. You are more likely to get skin disruptions during this time. Acne breakouts and dull skin are more likely.

B: What skin types are the most susceptible to being impacted by their cycle?

E: All skin types can be affected by hormones; during the early phase of the cycle, dry skin types are at risk, and towards the end of the cycle, during days 16-28, oily skin is more at risk. Sensitive skin is likely to be more inflamed during days 16-28.

B: How do hormones affect oily skin?

E: Androgens which are the male sex hormones, but both women and men have them, are responsible for stimulating the oil glands. When androgens bind to the receptors on the oil glands, they stimulate more sebum production. Oily skin types will have more androgens in their system, which can lead to acne and breakouts.

B: How do hormones affect dry skin?

E: Oestrogen affects the amount of sebum you produce and determines your skin's water content and how your skin barrier functions. If your skin barrier becomes impaired in any way, it can lead to trans epidermal water loss. The result is dry, dehydrated, and sometimes irritated skin. During cycle days 1-6, people with dry skin will need more hydration internally and externally. Applying a hydrating serum or richer moisturiser will help to minimise the effects of the hormones.

B: Does nutrition have an impact on our skin health?

E: It is vital to consume a balanced and varied diet to maintain the health of your skin. For your skin to function efficiently, it requires certain nutrients to be able to perform its functions. What you put into your body shows up on your skin, so it can be helpful to support what you eat with supplementation, notably if your diet lacks essential nutrients.

Omega-3s are essential fats; your body constructs hormones from Omega-3s, but it cannot make Omega-3, so it is necessary to get them from your diet. You can get Omega 3 from seafood; and in certain plant-based foods, like avocado or chia seeds.

Vitamin D affects many different functions in the body, including contributing to the normal function of the immune system. There are three ways to get this fat-soluble vitamin D. They are food, supplements, and sunlight. The problem with sunlight is that, as you already know, too much sunlight is not good for skin health and aging.

Our bodies can only store small amounts of vitamin B, so it is essential to ensure that you are replenishing your B vitamins daily. Vitamin B2 contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, and so if youre lacking in this vitamin you may consider actively trying to include more in your diet. If youre not getting it through food, you could consider a supplement such as Cleanmarine For Women.

Vitamins B1 and B6 contribute to the maintenance of normal psychological function. When we are stressed, our body releases the stress hormone cortisol, triggering our oil glands to produce more oil, which can lead to increased breakouts.

B: How related is acne to your cycle/hormones?

E: The androgen hormones work by switching on sebaceous glands causing them to increase sebum production. The increased sebum will cause your pores to enlarge to cope with the excess; as the sebum builds in the pores, it mixes with skin cells and can become clogged. Inflammation can occur at this stage, making it difficult for oxygen to penetrate the follicle, leading to the perfect breeding ground for bacteria resulting in a spot. As progesterone increases during the days 16-28, your cell turnover slows down, this is when your skin will appear dull, and breakouts will occur.

B: At what point in your cycle would you see your hormones have the most impact on your skin?

E: The answer to this question lies in your skin type. If you have dry skin, you need to take more care in your cycle's early stages. If you have oily skin, you need to be mindful towards the end of your cycle, and this is when I would encourage the use of ingredients such as salicylic acid to help minimise the build-up in your pores.

B: Does our age impact how much of an effect our cycle has on our skin?

E: Yes, it does! In our teens to early 20s, sebaceous glands increase in size, and androgens cause increased sebum production, making our skin oiler. Oestrogens have a role to play in so many different aspects of our skin, including skin surface lipids, sebum production, skin thickness, collagen, and more. When menopause nears, oestrogen starts to deplete once women reach perimenopausal age, the skin will begin to change. Wound healing will slow down, and the skin becomes thinner due to less collagen; it is less hydrated due to reduced levels of hyaluronic acid and less blood flow to the skin.

B: Finally, how does our lifestyle impact how much of an affect our cycle has on our skin?

E: Hormones play an essential role in many of our bodily functions, including sleep quality, energy metabolism, immune function, and more. When hormones become unbalanced, they can have an enormous effect on the skin. Healthy lifestyle choices will go a long way to helping maintain balanced hormones and clear skin.

When we sleep, our skin has its own circadian rhythm, where it performs certain functions at certain times throughout the night. Pore strips, or nose strips as they're commonly called, have been a beauty trend for many a year, going as far back to Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries and beyond. (I remember wearing one when I was a teenager and when my dad spotted me he was fully sure I had broken my nose.)

Fact or Fiction?

They certainly look effective in a "just gone 5 rounds with Mike Tyson way", but do they actually do the job you want them to?

We have asked skincare expert and facialist, Eavanna Breen* to weigh in and tell us what are the facts and what's the fiction when it comes to pore strips.

B: How do pore strips work?

E: Pore strips have a strong adhesive that when applied to wet skin and allowed to dry will remove the top layer of dead skin, oil, hair, and debris from your skin. The upper part of the blackhead can be removed.

B: Do pore strips actually work?

E: They can remove the surface of your blackheads and some dead skin cells, the adhesion will pull some of the blackheads out, but they are not a long-term solution to blackheads. The results are temporary.

B: Can they damage the skin?

E: While they sometimes have a tendency to dry out the skin especially if they are overused, they will not damage the skin. Often there is a fear that they will pull off healthy skin or cause broken capillaries, but this is not the case.

B: Any tips on how to use them?

E: These strips should be used on clean damp skin. Cleanse your skin and use a gentle exfoliant before applying the strip. (Do not use baking soda on your skin!) Soften the skin with a warm damp cloth and apply the strip to slightly damp skin. Follow the instructions on the pack as to how long you should leave them on. Once you remove the strip be sure to remove all remaining adhesive and apply your normal serums/moisturisers. These strips should only be used maybe every 3-4 weeks.

B: What are the alternatives to strips to minimise pores and remove blackheads?

E: The important thing is to get oil production under control, this can be done with ingredients like niacinamide, retinol, and salicylic acid. Pores can become enlarged due to high sebum production, salicylic acid will help to ensure the oil doesnt get clogged. Retinol not only will help with regulating the oil production in the skin, but it will help with collagen production which gives the skin strength and support, making the pores less open. Niacinamide will help to tighten pores and reduce build-up within the pore. Having extractions done by a professional on a monthly basis will help reduce pore size and keep the skin in overall better condition.

Last month we went on the hunt for beauty enthusiasts to trial an exciting new product for us. We asked three Beaut readers to tryNo7 Advanced Retinol 1.5% Complex Night Concentrate. Each of the readers used No7 Advanced Retinol 1.5% Complex Night Concentrate for four weeks and told us all about their experience!

We asked our three readers to introduce themselves, tell us a little bit about their skin and skincare routine, and then tell us how they got while trying the product over the past four weeks!

Karen

My name is Karen and I'm 41. My skincare routine consists of hot flannel cleansing morning and evening, hyaluronic serum, vitamin C moisturiser, eye cream and dailySPF30. Over the last 12 months my main area of concern was dull, congested skin and fine lines caused by dehydration. I have been looking to try a retinol based product for some time but have been nervous about sensitivity, striping, flaky skin, etc. So when I was offered a chance to try and test No. 7s Retinol 1.5% Complex Night Concentrate, I decided to give it a go.

For the first week, I used it twice as directed. After washing my face, I allowed my skin to dry for 10 minutes before applying the concentrate. I experienced no tingling sensation or redness after a further 10 minutes I applied my regular vitamin c moisturiser and went to bed. In the morning I cleansed my face as directed applied my serum, eye cream and SPF30 before a light covering of BB cream. My skin felt fresh, tight and glowing with no redness. I left a day in between applications and applied the concentrate after cleansing again on day 3, again following my usual night-time routine after.

This time I felt a slight tingling after I applied moisturiser. The next day my skin felt really clean, with a little redness on my cheeks. No flaking as of yet.

After the second application, my skin started to flake around the cheek area and forehead, as a result, I only used the concentrate once this week leaving four days between applications. I continued with my normal skincare routine morning and evening. After applying the concentrate as part of my night-time routine, I applied a Hyaluronic serum and went to bed.

In the morning, I cleansed my face as directed, applied my serum, eye cream and SPF30 before a light covering of BB cream. My skin felt tight with slight redness, but no more flaking. The next two days the flaking improved and by the third day, all redness and flaking had gone, leaving my skin feeling fresh and glowy. I am building up usage slowly because of this, applying every four to five days for now.

I am continuing to use the concentrate twice weekly, leaving 4 to 5 days between applications and the following night. Im using a hydrating Vitamin C face mask overnight. The texture and tone have improved, there is a small amount of flaking on my forehead between the brows and on my cheeks. I find face masks are helping this, overall, my skin feels cleaner and looks brighter. I think retinol usage should suit your skin type. For me, I experienced some sensitivity, and have done in the past with non-retinol-based products.

I will definitely continue to incorporate No. 7s Retinol 1.5% Complex Night Concentrate into my skincare routine, but no more than twice weekly. I can see the benefits of this product on my skin in terms of the improved texture (minus the flaking) and my skin tone appears more even.

Hi, my name is Sarah. Im 25 years old. I am not currently using any anti-ageing skincare products, so I have decided now is the time to start. I wanted to try No7 as it is less expensive than some other retinols.

As the instructions stated, I waited 10 minutes after washing my face to apply the retinol. I felt nice on the skin, no irritation. This product states it contains a retinol soother which sounds interesting as I know it takes time for the skin to get used to retinol. I plan to use the retinol 2 - 3 times a week at first and slowly build up as I have dehydrated skin. I used a lot of moisturisers last night after applying the retinol, and there had been no skin peeling as of yet.

I've been using the retinol cream twice weekly for the past two weeks. My skin became dry and flaked around my chin, but this is where I also become dry when using actives. I started to use moisturiser before and after applying the retinol which resolved the issue.

This is a thick cream and feels nice on the skin. I have used it 2-3 times weekly and my skin has had no reactions. Too early to see any changes yet, but I have experienced no additional breakouts since using the retinol.

I will continue to use this retinol as it is easy to incorporate into my skincare routine 2 -3 nights a week. I will also increase my usage to every night over the next two weeks.

My name is Jennifer, and I am 33. Before lockdown, I never really worried about my skin. I had a general skincare routine of cleanser, glycolic acid toner, hyaluronic acid and moisturizer. Brand wise - I tend to switch between what is on offer or what I might receive as gifts or samples.

I'll admit to skipping my skincare routine on plenty of nights when I was tired (or had been out) and just wanted to sleep instead. It never really had any adverse side effects though and people often remarked on how clear my skin was. However, lockdown stress, eating and inactivity have resulted in maskne (spots building up due to mask wearing) and a dullness to my skin that I never suffered with before. I am looking forward to trying out the No7 retinol serum.

I have used the No7 Retinol now consistently for the past few weeks and have increased my use to every second night (as per instructions on the box). I haven't had any reactions or irritation, and it is actually quite nice to put on. It is light enough to incorporate into my skincare routine without feeling as though I have too many layers on, and it absorbs quickly so it hasn't added much time to my routine. I notice that the skin on my forehead is looking much more vibrant and clearer, and the texture of my skin has improved dramatically.

The Night Concentrate has greatly improved the texture of my skin and has given me back my lockdown depleted glow. My skin looks fresher, healthier, and I am much happier with how it looks in Zoom calls. I use it now about three times a week and it is a very helpful addition to my skincare routine. I will definitely repurchase this as needed and keep using it is a permanent addition to my beauty routine.

The popularity of period cups has gone way up over the last few years. With people looking for more sustainable alternatives to period wear, it's a no-brainer. Each cup can last up to ten years so it doesn't fill up your waste bin like pads and tampons. Period cups join period pants and reusable pads as a way to make your period as close to waste-free as you can get.

So who is using period cups? Apart from almost every YouTube vlogger (seriously, they love period cups), and probably a few of your friends, DJ and presenter Tara Stewart is also a recent convert. Tara hosts the Dirty Laundry Podcast. In collaboration with RT, it explores the world of sustainable fashion. If there's one person who knows about periods, it's Tara Stewart. We spoke to her about the lengthy process she's been through to find a regular cycle. Tara explains how about four years ago, she started to get really bad period pains. She says,"I genuinely couldn't cope with the pain and had to go to hospital for it. I eventually went on a pill which worked for a while but then stopped working."

While all this was happening, she had to endure a continuous period, "I had a constant period for almost two years and it never stopped". Not fun. Thankfully, she did have support from her boyfriend (Irish hip-hop artist Mango) and family and friends. Since doctors were unsure of how to treat it, it took time for her cycle to return to a normal schedule. She notes that "there isn't enough research into periods and it's tough when every single woman is different."

During the past year, period cups have now become her period product of choice. Tara tells us she made the switch to a cup because "it holds so much more than a tampon and I wanted to try and do my bit for the environment". It took her a while to get the hang of using it - it takes around three cycles to get used to them - and she's so glad she put in the time. There are many brands to choose from: the Diva Cup, Pixie Cup, Moon Cup. You could spend days trying to find the perfect one online. Tara recommends OrganiCup, it comes in three easy sizes and is often mentioned as a good starter cup to try.

If you're not familiar with period cups, we're here to give you the 101. They hold the period in a reusable rubber or silicone cup for up to 12 hours. Whenever it needs to be changed, you simply take it out and empty it down the toilet. Then give it a quick rinse under cold water and reinsert. When your period is over you boil the cup for a few minutes in boiling water then store it away for your next cycle. Depending on your flow, there can be leaking, especially at the start. So it's recommended that you pair it with a pad or period pants while you get the hang of it.

By being open about her period struggles and why she swapped to period cups, Tara hopes to erase the stigma around them. As she puts it, periods are "something that all women have to deal with and so many of us struggle with them every single month". Since her arrival onto the Irish beauty scene in 2015, there has been no stopping Keilidh Cashell. The makeup artist has amassed 2.8 million TikTok followers, along with over half a million followers on Instagram and close to 200k YouTube subscribers. She has collaborated with some of the worlds biggest influencers including Manny MUA and James Charles. Keilidh has even launched her own cosmetics brand called Kash Beauty where she has been creating her own unique brand of products from the ground up over the last year and a half.

This lady knows her stuff when it comes to products that work and don't, so we just had to know what was in her makeup bag. Thankfully, Keilidh obliged and filled us in.

B: Hi Keilidh! Tell us about your make up bag.

K: Honestly, I dont have a makeup bag, I have a makeup library haha. I have drawers filled with an endless amount of makeup. I normally create very out there, crazy looks so its important for me to have various amounts of colours and products.

B: A makeup library sounds way better than a bag to be fair! What is the most recent addition to your makeup bag?

K: Ive been trialling some Fenty Skin products that my skin has been loving! Its a very easy 3-step-process and the products smell beautiful so I feel like Im getting the full spa experience.

B: What is your could-not-live-without product?

K: Oh wow, well I would have to say everything we have released so far. But if I had to pick one, it would be the Secret Treasure eyeshadow palette. Its the perfect brown smokey eye palette if I do say so much. It can be used on the eyes, face and body and is super universal.

B: Is there an item you would prefer to replace?

K: Anything in my makeup collection at the moment is stuff I have trialled for years and I know is reliable. And anything I think could need improving you can bet that we are creating something amazing with Kash Beauty!

B: What's the most repurchased item?

K: 100% my Nars foundations. Between the sheer glow and natural radiant long-wear foundations, I have repurchased them numerous time. They are my all-time faves! I havent changed my foundation in years.

B: Is there anything non-makeup/skincare inside?

K: Hmmm, I think the most random is mens hair gel, but I use it for my brows! It holds them in place so well!

B: We'll definitely have to try that! Tell us about your signature daytime look?

K: Daytime glam is all about looking fresh, but I still want to be glam! I add some coverage using concealer, this helps cover my under-eye bags and blemishes. Then I add some colour using a cream bronzer and blusher, cream products are my favourite! They wear off so well, especially for a day time look, and give the skin a gorgeous glow.

I love using products that have more than one purpose, especially when you are trying to get ready quickly! I would use the cream bronzer on my eyes for a wash of colour, and the cream blusher on my lips too! Then I would throw on some brows, bit of mascara, fake freckles using an eyeshadow and our lipgloss in the shade Starlight.

B: What was your all-time favourite makeup look for a photoshoot?

K: It would definitely have to be my grungey, spotlight eye for our first-ever campaign shoot with Kash Beauty. I love dramatic, dark eye makeup, its my fave. Especially grungey because its very forgiving, my advice would be the messier the better! It adds to the effect.

B: Finally, is there anything on your makeup bag wishlist?

K: Anything on my wish list or that I feel is missing, or that I could provide a cool take on, is currently in the works with Kash. Anything we will be releasing this year has been on my wish list for a long time!

What Skincare Ingredients Should You Be Looking Out For?

Many of you have decided to use this time to embrace looking after your skin and hair while it has a chance to take a break from the regular preening it usually gets. And our nails need just as much love and care. Or you may want to use this time to practice your own manicure skills and enjoy a nice pop of colour on your nails to brighten up this gloomy time.

We sought out the guidance of nail expert and entrepreneur extraordinaire Pamela Laird to advise us on how best to look after our nails at home.

Pamela is founder of Irish beauty brandMoxiLoves while she also made it to the final three of the 2019 series of The Apprentice in the UK.

Below she gives some great tips below for caring for your nails as well as how to perfect a manicure at home. If you are still looking down at your grown out Christmas shellac in despair, never fear, a while back Pamela also provided great advice for removing shellac at home.

Keeping your nails healthy

"Hydration and protection are key for keeping your nails in shape, even if youre not wearing nail colour, a layer of protection is always recommended", says Pamela. "Oil and hand creams are essential for keeping the hydration levels high, especially with all the hand sanitisers that can dry out nails and cuticles."

Pamela's top tip is to apply cuticle oil and hand cream and wrap hands in cling film for 20 minutes. "This locks in the moisture to the nails and helps to reduce the appearance of ridges. It also stops hangnails and split cuticles."

At home manicure

Pamela also has some great advice on how to achieve a salon-worthy manicure at home including expert tips for flawless long-lasting polish.

Clean the nail plate thoroughly

Before you let yourself near any polish, it's important to clean the nail. "Use lint-free cotton wool, and I must stress lint-free!", says Pamela. "I use Demakup sensitive cotton pads if even the smallest bit of fluff is left on the nail it will show up when you go to paint. I use this with some nail polish remover to clean the nail plate thoroughly, this removes natural oils from the nail and will keep your polish chip-free for longer!"

Base coat is a must

Your next step is your trustee base coat. "Please never skip your base coat this protects your nails but can also improve the condition. Try Sally Hansen Nail Rehab, this wonder product contains a protein complex to rejuvenate the nails and will plump out any ridges - giving you a perfect flawless base to apply your colour to."

Embrace spring colours

No doubt everyone is happy to leave this past winter behind so why not get your nails bang on trend for spring. "As we move away from the autumn-winter trends, we are seeing lots of bright colours coming through for spring," says Pamela. "Chanel has a soft peachy pink shade Pense, its limited edition so grab it while you can."

Applying nail polish

You may have noticed that your nail technician has a very precise method of applying your polish. Well, Pamela has some tips for how you too can polish like a pro. "Start about 1 millimetre away from the cuticle line, press your brush down and push towards the cuticle, gently move the brush down the nail and make sure youve covered the sides. You can do this in 3 or 5 motions there are no rules here! If you hit off the skin dont worry you can tidy this up after using an old paintbrush dipped in some nail polish remover."

Top coat

A great tip is to re-apply a top coat every 2/3 days. "This helps revive the glossy shine and brings your polish back to life! Try Essie Good to Go. Its super-fast drying."

Pre-painted nails are also an option

If youre struggling with the at-home manicure and you want a quick way to add some length, Pamela recommends Kiss Nails which have a beautiful range of prepainted nails ready to go. "The best part is you dont have to wait for them to dry. My favourite style is Kiss Gel Fantasy Lit Within," says Pamela.

Some TLC

After all that, it's time to finish off with a bit of TLC for those hands. "While its still that much colder, our hands and nails are that little bit drier. Now is the time to give your hands and nails that extra bit of TLC," says Pamela.
