John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder: tried and tested and not much use

john-frieda-goblonder_shampoo

Prompted by a comment on the Forums the other day, I was reminded to put up this review of John Frieda’s new Sheer Blonde Go Blonder, €8.49.

I sought out a blonde haired lassie who had no highlights in her hair, so we could see the pure unadulterated results. (That was actually quite difficult – try to think of a fair haired girl you know with nary a chemical treatment in her hair.)  But luckily I knew the very person and she gamely went ahead and used the whole bottle of shampoo to see if it would make any difference.

John Frieda say:

  • Go Blonder shampoo gently lightens natural, colour-treated and highlighted blonde hair
  • With citrus extract and chamomile, the formula improves the healthy look of your hair by tightening the cuticle and strengthening the hair shaft

We took a photo of her hair before she started (a crappy camera phone picture, too blurry to put up) so we could compare afterwards. A few weeks went by, she had finished the tube, and we ruminated over the results.

I thought her hair was a bit lighter. I definitely thought her hair was lighter. She on the other hand didn’t.

“Maybe it’s because it has been so gradual that you haven’t noticed?” I offerred.

“No” she replied firmly. “when we took the photo it looked darker because my hair needed to be washed. It’s clean now”

I was undeterred, perhaps by wishful thinking. “Look, it’s brought out highlights in the front of your hair”

“Maybe…” she said.  I think she was humoring me.   “One thing it does do though is dry out your hair. And I’ve had better results with the camomile shampoo I used to buy from a natural shop.  Tell your readers it’s good if they’ve greasy hair”.

Well that was the verdict.  Will you fair haired ladies be trying this or have you tried it already? (it works with highlights too).

Frizz forecast: bad hair weather front closes in

istock_000008129925xsmall

Localised wispy bits leading to widespread frizz as the next few days pass with the appearance of ponytails common.

Well that’s not what Evelyn Cusack was saying on the Weather Forecast – but that’s what I was hearing. Humidity, heavy rain and the rest are down for the next few days. After the freak storm on Wednesday night led to the closure of Hell (the Mater A&E) I thought the air might clear.

But it is not to be.

So what on earth are we to do with the hair to avoid looking like backcombed poodles? My money’s on Frizzease, but I’d love to know how the rest of you plan to tame the manes (here’s what you advised before when the weather was like this).

John Frieda Senior Stylist Jake Davis Answers Your Questions!

Monday, May 25th, 2009

OK, er, I have a confession to make: when I met Jake Davis, we spent far too much time nattering and so, um, I only got five of your questions answered.

I have medium length curly hair – any idea of an easy to manage style? I am useless at blow drying!

The most important thing, says Jake, is to keep layers long.  “Make sure that your hairdresser gives you some definition around the face too,” he adds. Both of those things will be the foundation on which your hair-care programme rests. “Use the Curl Around range,” Jake recommends.  It relaxes and prepares hair, and afterwards use a styling product like Spiral Style Curl-Defining Spray Gel before you do a quick blast with the dryer. “Frizz-Ease serum is also perfect for curls,” he advises.

I have straight hair, and I like to keep it long – but the weight of it pulls down so it has no volume around my head. Are there any tips or tricks that could give it some oooomph?

Jake showed me how to do this while he was blow-drying my own gruaig to perfection. Layers can help to start off with because they take some of the weight out of a full head of long,  heavy hair – which is a recipe for a volume-less crown.  You can read some of my tips for volume on my post on managing frizzy barnets, but Jake’s tip is a blow-drying one. Use a good few squirts of Blow Dry Lotion in wet hair and then when drying,  flip your parting the wrong way, blowdry using a round brush, and then flip hair back to its normal parting. Voila! Instant volume!

New from John Frieda: Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Serum

Frizz Ease

We’re long-standing fans of John Frieda’s offerings here at Beaut.ie, so I was very excira when I spotted what I thought was a new range from the man himself. At a glance, it looked like there were some new variations on the Frizz-Ease line, namely some heat protection thingymajigs to keep hair from frying in the heat of a straighteners or dryer. Excellent! On closer inspection, though, it turns out that there’s just the one product in the range, which is the Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Serum.

Ah.

Still, it sounds like a do-it-all good ‘un: used on towel-dried hair it safeguards from heat damage as well as from the frizz that can be caused by UV exposure, while adding gloss and shine to straight, wavy or curly styles. And as if all that wasn’t enough, the UV protection element will also help to minimize colour fading – talk about a multi-tasker!

John Frieda Frizz-Ease products are widely available from pharmacies and supermarkets nationwide.

Haystack hair from John Frieda Curl Controller

haystack.jpgOh dear… another post of disappointment.

This is becoming too much of a habit for my liking!

I usually LOVE anything John Frieda and find it does exactly what it says it will do. Fights frizz, increases shine, silkys up hair – and all for a Very Reasonable price.

But I HATE this Curl Controller stuff. Part of the Frizz Ease range it’s a serumy/gel stuff thats supposed to tame and define curls.

It makes them crispy. After a day it turns your hair into dull straw.

And there’s nothing we curly girls hate more – am I right?

Happy Hair Overnight

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

We’re well used to all manner of night creams and serums for our faces. But what about an overnight treatment for your gruaig?

The idea’s been around for a while as a DIY jobbie [think olive oil + clingfilm] but Kiss And Makeup reckon that shop-bought versions are looking like The Next Big Thing in haircare. By applying skincare technology to hair, they promise to repair, restore, rejuvinate and generally refabulize your locks while you sleep – ah, my kind of multitasking.

If you’ve got £135 [yes, that's pounds] to spare and can get to a SpaceNK, you could go mad altogether and splash out on Frederic Fekkai’s Overnight Hair Repair. Alternatively, you could try an overnight offering from the likes of GHD, John Frieda, Kerastase, KMS, Pantene or Umberto Giannini… without having to talk to your bank manager first.

Glaze over with John Frieda

john frieda

We love John Frieda here at Beaut.ie, mostly for his wonderous Frizz Ease range, but also for his lovely colour enhancing ranges for blondes, brunettes and redheads. Not to get too technical, this stuff actually works where other so-called colour enhancing ranges don’t, because they’ve invested so much in technology to explore how light reflects off each individual hair depending on pigmentation levels, and as those levels differ across shades, that technology is tweaked to be as specific as it can be for each. And they’re not just for dyed hair either – you get the same results if you’re a natural blonde or if you’re a colour treated blonde. Phew, basically, their colour ranges are GOOD!

One of the most recent additions to the Sheer Blonde, Brilliant Brunette and Radiant Red stable is a range of Luminous Colour Glazes . They’re an at home product which mimic the sort of glossing treatment you’d get at a salon to pep up colour between dye jobs, or just to give hair an extra shine and gloss. And they’re really really good!

I tried Chocolate to Espresso, as I have very dark hair, but you can get Luminous Colour Glazes in lots of shades, so there will be one to suit. It’s a cinch to use – shampoo and condition as normal (ideally using the complimentary suite of products to get best results) and then apply the glaze. It’s designed to use in-shower, so you can put it on, and then shave yer legs, or exfoliate or do anything that’ll take the requisite 3 minutes. Wash it out, dry hair as normal and prepare to be wowed by sleek, slippy locks, bursting with shine and renewed colour.

All that for about €11? Get thee to Boots NOW!

Thank God for John Frieda

How is your beauty routine coping with the weather?

And what are you doing with your hair? It’s impossible to keep it nice. It doesn’t matter if I shell out to go to the hairdresser for a blowdry or spend hours wrestling with it myself. In a matter of seconds the rain and humidity will have reduced it to a mass of frizz

Nature has wickedly endowed me with naturally big hair. Which I hate. I can’t use straighteners as it’s “over processed”. Dangerously so. For over processed read, years of dying, bleaching, highlighted and torture by heat styling devices.

So all summer I’ve left it in it’s natural state. There was no point in doing otherwise. Calmed only by Aveda Be Curly/ John Frieda Brilliant Brunette creams and serums/ the odd dollop of Frizz Ease.

Mixing Redken Fresh Curls with some hair gel has also worked to tame it.

What are you doing with your hair in this weather? Please give me some good tips!

(no) Big Hair

thickening fix it fast sprayAh Big Hair, how we love you at beaut.ie. Yup, it’s safe to say we’ve embraced this seasons trend for volume big style – geddit? Big style? Uhuh? Sometimes I just kill me.

Anyway, we’ve had posts about curlers, we’ve had posts about volumising shampoos and conditioners. But now here’s something else to help us add poouf to our ‘dos.

It’s John Frieda Thickening Fix it Fast Spray and it’ll give volume and oomph to even the finest hair, it won’t weigh it down, and if that wasn’t enough handy yokes to be doing, it’ll also cement hair in place while its at it.

Buy it from Boots, where it should cost about €7-8.
