Cupla links to keep you occupied until normal service resumes on Monday:

  • Foodie fans will love Ginger Girl – a pretty website packed full of scrumptious stuff for those who love food. Yum, that’ll be me, so.
  • Natural goodies are all the rage at Green Angel, where products are hand made in Ireland from seaweedy goodness. Deeeelish.
  • I discovered two new Irish style blogs during the week and like both a lot. Rate it: takeaway swaps

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Oh I know it’s hard… It’s January and we’re all supposed to be eating more healthily. But sometimes you NEED to get that takeaway. Maybe it’s Friday night and you always get one on Friday night. Or maybe it’s any old night and you just can’t be arsed cooking.

So is there anything that satisfies the takeaway craving without being a TOTAL SIN?

  • From the chipper.
Nothing, nada. It’s all deep fried and battered and full of lard. Stay far away from Borzas is my advice.
  • From the Chinese.
Oh this is better. Remember though that fried rice has more calories than chips and you’re away. Just stick with the boiled. Chicken and veg stir fries are only 3 points in weightwatchers. Yahoo!
  • From the Indian
Indian curries are jam packed full of fat and oil. Delicious though they may be you’re better off with the dry dishes – tikkas and tandoories. Step away from the poppadoms and go very easy on the naan.
  • McDonalds: just get a salad. Of course! Sure isn’t that the reason we all go to McDonalds?

So what are your tips?

Beaut.ie Diet Diaries: the Negative Calorie Diet

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Lose weight – fast! With NO effort! Eating delicious food and NEVER feeling hungry!

Wow this diet sounds like a no brainer doesn’t it? There’s no scientific (or any other evidence) to back it up – but sure what has that to do with it, hah?

You see, the Negative Calorie Diet works on the made up basis that certain foods use up more calories while being digested then they actually contain. Foods like celery, apples, lemon, lettuce, onions, kiwis, oranges, asparagus… And eating them produces a calorie deficit that causes the body to effortlessly burn up calories!

For those of us who are too dim to understand how such a miracle is possible, an Easy To Understand example is given.

“A piece of pie consisting of 500 calories may only require 100 calories to be digested by your body thus resulting in a net GAIN of 400 calories to be added to your fat storage.

On the other hand, an apple that contains 65 calories may require the same 100 calories to digest, but resulting in a net LOSS of 35 calories from your storage of your body fat!”

Wow!I know you’ll be wanting to download the diet now. The e-book costs only $24.99, an absolute steal I’m sure you’ll agree.

Celebrate World Vegetarian Day!

Friday, October 5th, 2007

roast veg.jpg

If you were still in any doubt that a veggie lifestyle consists of much, much, more than lentil bake and er, chickpeas, then tomorrow will prove you wrong.

Dublin will celebrate World Vegetarian Day tomorrow (Sat 6th Oct) in Cultivate, Temple Bar.

The Annual Fair is the biggest event in the Irish vegetarian calendar – and is a can’t miss for anyone interested in health and nutrition, whether you’re vegetarian or not. The schedule for the day is packed with delicious food tastings from some of the top vegetarian restaurants in Ireland, cookery demos and a range of stalls with info on every aspect of vegetarian health and nutrition. Talks promise to be interesting and lively and will take place throughout the day.

So get thee to Cultivate, Essex Street West on Sat 6 October (11am – 5pm) to enjoy.

Who knows – you might be converted if you’re not already. Plus you might discover (as I have) that lentil bake is actually really nice!

Pig2Twig: break that diet cycle

Friday, August 24th, 2007

p2t_header.jpg

Vegetan tells a story that is all too familiar to a lot of us and of how Neris and India’s ‘Pig2Twig’ diet snapped her sister out of a vicious dieting circle that kicked off every Monday morning.

Every Wednesday evening the diet would end through sheer deprivation and starvation leading her to nosh her way through a whole chocolate cake. Instead of the slice she would normally treat herself to. India Knight and Neris Thomas were veterans of this whole Monday to Wednesday diet disaster scenario and Vegetan tells us “this is not just a diet book. It is a fun read, looks pretty and prepares you for the hard times ahead. It is not an ordinary diet either, there is so much food to eat out there while you lose weight. You do have to give up sugar though (even fruit) at the start and take a lot of food supplements like Chrominum Polynicotinate to control cravings. And give up the drink.

“Does it work? Well if you stick to it by the letter like my sis did, the results are very encouraging. She lost six pounds in the first month, five in the second and two stone in the five months she’s been on it.” (more…)

Danone Essensis Launches in Ireland

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

yoghurtWe all know that diet can have a major impact on how we feel – and look. If you eat crap, you tend to look like your primary dietary sources are McDonalds and the ready meal isle of your local supermarket. But if you eat well, it equally shows – in your clear skin and healthy hair.

French brand Danone recently launched a new dairy product, Essensis, available as a yoghurt and as a drink, which they say is a dermonutrition product specifically aimed at the skincare market. The new range, which comes in 3 flavours (plain, peach-apricot and raspberry-pomegranate) , contains a fancy ingredient called ProNutris, which itself is a combination of omega 6 from starflower oil, antioxidant-tastic green tea, vitamin e and those all important probiotics too.

Use it for 6 weeks and you should notice a big difference. It nourishes the deepest layer (the layer topical skincare products find it hardest to permeate to) of the skin, and it can also aid hydration – it can actually help keep moisture in the skin, good news for anyone who finds their skin tight by lunchtime.

WIN: I have 4 vouchers giving €2.99 off the purchase of a pack of Essensis. If you want one, e-mail competitions@beaut.ie and the first four to reply with their name and address will be getting a voucher in the post.

Beaut.ie Diet Diaries: The Hot Dog Diet

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Coke-Hot-Dog.jpg

The Hot Dog Diet is another fantastically heathy and nutritionally sound weight loss method, all the way from the good ol US of A.

There’s lots of variations of this diet – but this is the one that appeared (and was not recommended needless to say) on Dr Phil.

Day 1: 9 bananas
Day 2: 9 eggs
Day 3: 9 hotdogs

You can drink all the water you want though. And black tea and coffee. Yahoo! But you can’t eat ANYTHING else at all.
This is a fad diet with a capital F. Anyone who’s ever done the Cabbage Soup, or other fad diets like this one, knows that they’re unsustainable and so unhealthy. You will be like a lighting hoor the whole time you’re on the diet. Dizzy, weak, irritable… and starving. Oh you’ll lose weight alright, because you can’t eat carbs and the calories per day are only about 600, but it will all be water and will go straight back on.

And of course yo yo dieting fecks with your metabolism really badly.

But I bet most of us have done mad diets like this at some stage. Go on admit it! Have you?

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

I´ve been reading a LOT of magazines this week. More than normal like. Every single one of them is bursting with diet “tips”. Like:

Share your knowledge and experience – what have you found that works well. Have you got a great recipe thats saved you from diet disaster? You can even include some fruit ones if you like!
