dior-poudrier-dentelle-open-001-hr-e-mail

Oh boy, it’s like actual, real lace, isn’t it? Utterly gorgeous, in other words, and possibly too pretty to actually, y’know, use. I should probably stop gushing and start telling you what it is, so here goes: this little pan of pink is Dior Poudrier Dentelle, €57.50 and it comes in Pink Lace, above, and Peach Lace. Both are limited editions so you know the drill – if you want it, get your skates on: the collection lands on the 15th of this month, and I would think it won’t stick about for long.

SS10: Benefit Sugarbomb

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

sugarbomb

Look for Benefit’s new face powder on counter towards the end of January: it’s called Sugarbomb, and it joins a line-up that boasts Coralista, 10, Dandelion, Thrrrob, Dallas and phew, a couple more besides.

I know it confuses peeps that they have so many blushers available but ignore the packaging and focus on the shades instead – their offering is just like other beauty brands – they have pinks, peaches, corals and bronzers just like all the other cosmetics houses, it’s just that they don’t come in a uniform compact. And as far as I’m concerned it’s a bonus that each comes dickied up in its own fancy livery, anyway.

Sugarbomb will cost €33.50 and contains four shimmery shades which you swirl together on a brush and apply to the cheeks. It’s shimmery, it’s pretty and best of all, they suggest that you then pick one shade and apply it over your swirl, just on the apples of the cheeks, for an even bigger pretty-factor.

I am ashamed to say that while I have one of these, I have done nought with it yet but stick my finger into it, pull it back out and go, “oOooOoh”. Yes, bad beauty reviewer. I faithfully promise to try it out STAT. If you can’t wait till the end of January to get your paws on one, you can order online from the US Benefit website for $28.

Make Up Store Blush in Fresh Needs a Light Hand!

makeup store blush

Another Make Up Store product that made it into The World’s Most Cluttered Bathroom following my recent product cull was a blusher in Fresh, €18. The pic above does it zero justice (seriously, the brand need to work on their pix which do not do the quality of their products any favours) but it’s a fairly matte pinky-peach with a delicate smattering of golden shimmer. A bit like Nars Orgasm, a bit like Benefit Coralista, but more pink-toned and more day-wear friendly.

Nice, in other words. The pan is a generous size, and this is a clever touch: because Make Up Store is an artistry brand, the lid of the pot easily detaches and re-attaches, making it great for artists on shoots or anyone who needs quick and easy access to the whole pan without the lid getting in the way. I like.

I liked less the fact I didn’t realise this blusher is pigmented to the maxXx – I mean there is a serious amount of colour going on here. Scads of it. Loads. MILLIONS. Even after swirling and tapping off the excess, I got a big fright when I saw the havoc my blusher brush had wrought on my face.

Aaiiiee! I was like a painted whore-style clown. But only on one side – I’d stopped before I got to cheek number two to gasp in astonishment. Frantically I followed my own taming-down-blush recommendations and got it back to a level that was flattering and not frightening.

Learning to go easy with this stuff is lesson number one, but the fact you need a very little for a pretty effect means it’s going to last a long time, and thumbs up for that, says I.

Maybelline Come up Trumps With Expertwear Blush in Rose

maybelline

Forget Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, here’s Maybelline and the Half-Strength Coralista. A little packet arrived in my letterbox last week containing the brand’s new Expertwear Blush in 77 Rose, €7.49.

Rose it might be named, but it’s a light peach with very faint shimmer that really put me in mind of Coralista running at half strength. I know some of you were horrified by the ultra-coral of the Benefit product last week so if you’d like to try the shade but without needing to don yer sunglasses afterwards, then this is ideal, I reckon.

The pan is a generous size, the price-point is great and it also comes in four other shades: peach, rosewood, golden beige and flash plum. The only let-down is the packaging, which is functional, and that’s about as nice as I can be about it.

Oh – and the other thing I reckoned it’d be good for? Remember Daniel Chavez’s contouring tips last week? This is a great budget alternative to the Smashbox product he recommended.

Breaking News: Blush Out; Bronzer Out, Contouring & Pale and Interesting In, say Smashbox

smashbox

“OHMYGOD are you ready for this?” So sayeth Smashbox’s main man Daniel Chavez as I settled myself onto the couch beside him. “Em, yes I am,” I say, not even remotely alarmed (I’ve encountered his ebullient ways a time or two before), “I’m even sitting down and everything.”

I’m nothing if not a smartarse.

“Blush. Is. O.U.T!” declares Daniel.

OUT! How can this be? Did I not do a big gushy post all about Benefit Coralista earlier in the week? Oh, I just can’t keep up with all these trends. And on the face of it, this one sounds pretty stupid. But he explains: “take a peach blusher – not bronzer, bronzer is O.U.T -  and apply it below the apples of the cheeks. What you’re looking for here is to contour and give shape to the face, not a pop of colour.” The perfect shade for this is the one in the Reign collection, (or above) which Lynnie blogged about the other week.

Right so, I was getting the point of this now and itching to grab the blush out of his hands and have a go, but politeness reigned and I kept my snatching claws to myself. Besides, he’d said something quite interesting as he was explaining that Blush Was O.U.T, and I wanted to know more.

“So Daniel,” says I, “did you say bronzer is O.U, eh I mean, out?” “Yes!,” he exclaimed. “Smashbox says bronzer is O.U.T for the autumn and Christmas period.” Wow, he seemed so certain of the timeframe. Could it be that mna na hEireann will down tools and adopt the natural look? I’m sceptical but if you’re feeling pale and interesting then the brand have a really lovely little product as part of the Christmas collection, Baked Fusion Softlights in Stardust, €30, top left.

It’s like a MAC Mineralize Skinfinish, but not marbled and  less robot-y, if you get me. So if MSF terrifies you, then this could be a goer because the fact that it’s baked means the powder is fine and sheer and doesn’t deliver the same slightly metallic finish the MAC product can.

Swirl a powder brush around in a circular movement, employ your tapping/flicking/blowing method of choice and use this as a setting powder all over liquid foundation for a very subtle shimmer. Of course you could layer it up on the top of cheekbones and temples for even more illumination if you wanted, but I’m using it to set my base and it’s very nice. If you really require to it multitask, you could pick out individual shades and use them as shadow too – so it’s versatile.

Psst: do you want to know when you can lash the blusher on again with impunity?

Benefit Coralista – Where Have You Been all my Life?

coralista

I really thought we’d reviewed Benefit Coralista, €31.50, but while it’s been mentioned in passing and even given away, no one’s set down their feelings for it in digital-style writing yet. I wasn’t very interested in it when it launched, sniffily reckoning that I wouldn’t like it. God knows why I thought that, BECAUSE I BLOODY FECKING WELL LOVE IT.

A late convert, I know, but this is wonderful. It’s a superb product that performs excellently, smells delicious and really really transforms a face of makeup. The orange/coral shade is terrifying, I’ll give you that. But it’s easy to use – though throw away that brush and use a regular angled brush blush, you’ll get a better result. I buff it onto the apples of my cheeks and back out to the hairline and regularly wear it during the day. It’s easier and less in yer face than the pinks I use so much, and it’s also very warming. There’s some subtle sparkle in there too which I like a lot.

I tend to like to wear contrasting makeup so I’ve found this looks really good with thick, winged navy liner – blue (ok, I know I’m stretching it there) being opposite orange on the colour spectrum. It’s pricey, and as ever, the carton is prone to disintegration, but you get a whopper of an amount, and the sheer prettiness of the result makes this an all-round, tip-of-the-tops buy.

How To: Tone Down Your Blusher

blusher

“Had something in my eye and went to bathroom to see what it was,” said MontyC on yesterday’s Blather. But when she got there, she was in for a little bit of a shock: “all I could see was how RIDICULOUS my blusher looks!,” she wailed, adding “I just stood there thinking ‘I sat through a meeting looking like THIS?!’”

Oops!

Glamazon sympathised with her plight. “Have you ever noticed that blush is the worst thing to get wrong as you can’t correct it?”  But I think I may know how. And I know this because I frequently wear waaaaay too much blusher. It’s BAA time, girls – Blusher Abusers Anonymous.

I loves it, y’see. It’s so pretty and uplifting and nice and I just can’t resist. I am especially adoring Benefit’s Coralista at the moment. Oh wowee zowee, (yes I am a Pavement fan), this is norjus. It’s orange, it’s sparkly, it buffs on oh-so-easily and it even smells good. I amazed myself with my love for it, but there you go – beauty is endlessly absorbing. As are my cheekbones, if my liberal application methods are anything to go by, so I had to develop some tone-it-down strategies.

I’ve got two. Want to know what they are? Check after the cut!

Beaut.ienomical: Barry M’s New Blushers

barry m blush

If you liked the look of Revlon’s matte blushers but perhaps weren’t so wowed by the subtle shades then this new launch from brights-a-go-go brand Barry M should tempt you: six new powder blushers are available and they’re screamingly loud. Yay!

€6.95 is the damage for each and but in case you’re really quailing at the intensity of the shades, I’ll let you in on a little secret – they’re sheer, so you can build coverage to a finish you like.  The low down on each is after the cut.

AW09/10 Stars: YSL’s Creme de Blush

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

blush creme

The Autumn collections are firmly on counter and I’ve been testin’ n’ tryin’ out products from a fair few of them. This year, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how many new favourites I’ve found, so thought I’d tell yiz a little about a few I particularly like.

First up? It’s YSL’s smooth, creamy blush, Creme de Blush. At €42 for 5.5g of product, yes, this is really expensive. Damn it, its also really nice and limited, so I’ll be very sad when it runs out.

Available in three shades – Velvety Peach, above, Powdery Pink and Silky Praline – it’s just a dream to use for novices and hardened makeup fans alike because it’s so malleable and easy to apply and blend.  In the pic above it looks liquidy, but in reality, it’s a dense mousse with a lot of silicone and equally, a lot of pigment.

I’m using Powdery Pink and it is SWIT SWOO. Mine is a month old now and has been used 2-3 times a week since, with barely a dent made in the top of it, so I’m thinking this’ll last, helping to justify the cost.

Lastly, the result. There’s nothing for it gals, I have to bow to beauty cliche. This delivers that ultimate beauty descriptor: the perfect pop of pink.
