Breaking news in the FÁS 'Nailgate' saga!

Details about that $410 bill emerged in the Dáil yesterday, as it was revealed that Mary Harney and the wife of former FÁS Director General Rody Molloy were the beneficiaries of treatments in Cocoa Beach, Florida, which were paid for by le taxpayer. Although it was originally reported in the Indo that the bill was incurred in 2005, Senator Shane Ross confirmed on Morning Ireland earlier that the date on the receipt does actually say 2004 and that the misprint was his error, meaning that Mary Harney would have been Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment at the time.

As it turns out, Solutions Salon isn't just a nail bar - they also do hair! Two stylists from the establishment apparently made daily visits to the Radisson hotel where Mary Harney was staying to tend to her tresses. Last night, a spokesperson said that Ms. Harney had been having nothing more than a common-or-garden wash 'n' blowdry during these appointments.

When I very excitedly relayed all of this news in the office this morning, one of the girls remarked that we really couldn't begrudge paying for her to have the gruaig done, isn't she a proper Government representative and (in quieter tones) sure doesn't she need all the help she can get? Well, that's just mean.

There are still a few questions that I'd like to see answered. For starters, why were the services of two stylists required at a time for a standard wash and blowdry? Maybe she's a bit like my doggie Boris, who hates having baths, so she had to be held down by one stylist saying "Shush now... you're grand... good girl" while the other lathered and rinsed. And a few shampoos and sets does not $410 make, even when coupled with call-out costs, so what the feck was Rody's missus having done?
