Base Matters: Maybelline Dream Creamy Foundation

Note 1. I really did think Maybelline Dream Creamy foundation would be shite.

Note 2: it is not.

On to the review:
The newest stablemate in the whole ‘dream’ franchise, I was sent this a few weeks ago and took it out of the testing pile about a week ago to give it a whirl. Didn’t expect much. It looks very similar to Max Factor’s Liquid Illusion foundation, there’s a glass base containing the product with a plastic screw top that sits above. It contains a well with a sponge. Yuck, I ditched that and whaddya know, this was the perfect chance to give that Estee Lauder foundation brush a proper go.  Applied with a sponge this would be very heavy looking on the skin (plus you’d go through it at a rate of knots), so a firm, paint-brush style foundation brush is ideal to give a nice veil of cover.

The formula is, as the name suggests, very creamy. In fact it’s very nice. My dry skin liked it a lot and a week’s worth of usage didn’t throw up any problems like flakiness or congestion, so it’s safe to say it’ll suit you if you’ve a dry complexion and like a creamy, medium-coverage base.

It does give a nicely dewy appearance too and while there’s all this guff about a ‘baby-smooth finish’, girls, just ignore this ridiculous crap. Ah Maybelline, is it not enough that the product is decent? Why try and add completely foolish, nonsense claims onto a product consumers will probably like all on its own merits in any case?

I take a dim view of this sort of marketing cobblers, I can tell you. And I strongly suspect it does absolutely nothing for a brand in the eyes of the people buying its products, either.

Lastly, price is good – you’ll pay €12.39 for it and the only bad thing about this is the shade choice. Like all budget foundations, there are just a few options, in this case five. That’s grand if you fit the colour profile, but as always, you’re bang outta luck if you don’t.

Ha ha, the timing of this post is amazing! I only posted in Blather asking if people have used it!

  • roxy says:

I use this foundation! and i really really love it! goes on so smooth and lasts all day! a very handy one for the bag too!
I find it better than the maybelline dream satin liquid makeup.. although I do quite like that too! Luckily enough the nude colour is perfect for me, but there isn’t much choice so I guess you’re either going to be lucky or unlucky with this!
    But I really like it!

  • hockeysticks says:

i have the normal dream mousse and i like it .. but i think this will be more up my street as i have dry skin .. am thinking i want to buy this pronto even though i have 1.5 jars of dream mousse already (i stockpile when i hit a sterling zone…sooo cheaper) hmmmmm …
    beaut.ie you tempt me …

  • penny says:

how does this one compare to Max Factor’s Liquid Illusion foundation? I use that, but this could be a cheaper option if there is a very pale shade available. I always apply the Max Factor with a foundation brush – the sponge that comes with it are useless and the foundation lasts heaps longer if you use the foundation brush.

  • ceci says:

Hmmm this is tempting. My Dior Nude foundation separated and it seems pretty unusable since, I don’t know any way to make it better so if anyone has suggestions let me know!!

So I might try go with this as a cheap option, I am not sure about the paintbrush style brush as I have never been able to get any foundation to look right with that, could you use a MAC style 147 (I think its called that, its the one you use to buff on)?

  • Kirstie says:

Penny – not tried liquid illusion myself but they deffo look very alike!

  • sweetie says:

Ceci, my Dior Nude is the same!! When I got it, I thought I finally found The One… But then all of the sudden it started to make my skin look all flaky, then it started to look a bit off… And just recently I read somewhere that it actually contains quite a lot of alcohol:( That woudl explain why my usually oily forehead developped dry patches :S

This Maybelline foundation will be checked ;) What I like about the drugstore brands is that you can go to Boots, apply the stuff to your face, and walk out to see how it looks in the daylight, how it wears during the day, without the pressure from SAs to buy straight away.

  • Senebabe says:

Wonder what its like for a slighty more oily complexion?? (The usual oily T zone with a dry forehead and sides of face)

Im always tempted to try something new….

  • Mise says:

I’d be VERY wary of trying this as I’ve used Maybelline mousse foundation in the past, and thought it was absolute SHITE!
Currently using Max Factor miracle touch which I really like. Unfortunately I go through a compact in about a fortnight, so it works out pretty expensive.
I bought Clinique though the other day, but haven’t tried it out yet.

  • alchemystee says:

It does sound lovely, although the Dream Matte Mousse is wonderful on my combination skin (I absolutely NEVER touch liquid foundations), it really is as good as any expensive brand on the market, if not better.

Pity their ads always look like they’re just targeting the teenage market!!

  • Kirstie says:

mise – try it with a brush? I betya you’d get longer out of it. Also, it’s not like the mousse, my skin doesn’t get on that well with it either, it’s too drying.

  • ceci says:

sweetie, so glad its not just my Dior Nude that did that. I was the same, thought it was the best foundation initially. It just didn’t last well for me and then separated which I think is the end of a foundation. I wouldn’t mind but I had well over half the bottle left, grrrr.

  • qwerty says:

HA. I have used the Dior Nude as well. I have tried 2 bottles and both of then separated and became lumpy. Of course according to Dior this has NEVER happened & so must be MY fault. I think that I will print this blog and show it to them at Dior. Yeah.

  • Kirstie says:

lawks, maybe it was a bad batch? I’ve had two bottles as well and no probs with it at all (though not used one now in a bit so must take a look at it later)

  • qwerty says:

Sorry forgot the bit about the Dream Creamy foundation. I have tried it and really like it., but you are bang on about the shade choice, I guess I got lucky. Must try the brush method .

  • baby in a corner says:

i got the dior skin nude in early november and have no problems with separation. hopefully it doesn’t happen as i love it.

  • sevda says:

Mise I gave up on the max factopr for the same reason – at almost €20 a pop it meant it was actually more epensive then the EL I use now.

I only use a comapct during the day for touching up and not even every day at that.

  • Olaola says:

Alchemystee, ditto the ads targeting the teenage market… I always feel like I’m waaay too old to use anything from Maybelline, whereas actually on trying I mostly like their products! Colossal waterproof is one of my favourite mascaras, their foundations are gradually getting better and nail varnishes are not bad either. Just those adverts and teenage packaging… eek!

  • ceci says:

yeah its interesting to see people having the problem with Dior, the SA told me that was very unusual and said some people keep it in the fridge and told me to do that with the next one! That seemed a bit extreme to me, I would never put foundation in there, plus its not very handy to have to leg it downstairs every morning to put my make up out of the fridge.

  • marquise says:

I was looking at this in Boots earlier and very nearly bought it – I always buy expensive foundations but wouldn’t mind trying it – one of my friends raves about it and it has a nice consistency. I have four foundations open at the moment though so I am going to make my way through those first!

  • Mise says:

Sevda, that’s why I bought Clinique last week. It was €28, but will definitely work out cheaper in the long run.

  • sarabelle says:

How is it’s lasting power? I’m an awful one for buying cheapo foundations and being left with a flaky face! I was saving up to buy MAC Fluid Fix but the pricetag on this has tempted me..

  • roxy says:

sarabelle- I find it has great lasting power! my face always looks nice and made up at the end of my day at work.
I was very pleasently surprised with this makeup! it’s def a staple for my bag now! x

  • Tbell says:

i like the sound of this…coverage wise what are we talking??

id like a cheapo version of EL double wear for days im not working and just lazying around/popping to the shop etc!

i found the orignal dream matte mousse very patchy but maybe that was the person applying it!!

  • Belladonna says:

Tbell, for a cheapo version of DW, Revlon ColourStay is a good bet. It’s practically bombproof – so much so that you might get a bit of a shock taking it off at the end of the day, seeing how much you actually have on!

Like the DW, I probably wouldn’t use it day to day as it could clog up your skin over time. Think it’s about €15-16 so less than half DW.

  • Reindeer says:

Hmmm.. How pale is the palest of these? Im on Nars at the minute- the palest shade, and even then its still just about right. Unfortunately it has no pinkish tones in it that I normally go for… Anyone know how pale it comes? And any alternatives? I’m liking the Nars but my skin is a bit picky these days!

  • razzle dazzle says:

Wonder how this compares to the new bourjois one? I got the Bourjois one last week and I really like it so far except for the fact it has no spf in it. Neither does this one it seems.

  • Aisling H says:

hmm.. would it be great for coverage? i need good coverage! does anyone know of a foundation that isnt too expensive but good for covering up? my loreal true match is about to run out! and so is the last bit of christmas money i managed to save! iv only got about 20euro :(

  • Kirstie says:

Aisling – if you put it on with the sponge it’s coverage-tastic, but it also won’t last long. Rimmel have good heavy-coverage bases like lasting finish, could be worth a try.

  • Aisling H says:

    thanks kirstie!

  • FiFi says:

Oh my golly gosh gumball!!! I have to say i love this new foundation! Having dry skin and finding a good foundation is really hard for me..Since they discontinued Armani Hydraglow :( ..This is great and a bargain price too!
