Yay or Nay? Leighton Meester’s Strong Eyes & Lips Combo

leighton-meester

Her Gossip Girl co-star Blake Lively may have came out on top in our recent Best ‘Sleb Hairstyles poll, but I think that the usually-can’t-put-a-foot-wrong Leighton Meester is really letting the GG side down with this look. Strong eyes plus strong lips is perhaps the classic beauty no-no, and while I’m normally all for pushing beauty boundaries and trying new things and experimenting with looks and colours and textures, but I just don’t think this beauty ensemble meshes well at all at all.

The individual elements are ok in their own right – the cherry red pout could work well, if the deathly pallor of her pale cheeks was warmed up with a daycent sweep of blusher. And I quite like the dusty purple smoky eye with gold highlights, even if it is a bit messy, zombie-who-got-punched-in-the-sockets looking.

Other beauty editors have been falling over themselves to congratulate Leighton for her beauty bravery in chanelling the ’80s with this look, but what do you make of it?

  • Aphrodite says:

Horrible. The eyes and the lips totally clash shadewise and don’t complement on another at all. Plus the eyes are dreadful looking anyway

  • xgirl says:

This might have worked better without all the shadow below her eyes, but I’m going to vote no on this look.

  • Selina says:

Terrible. Makes her look trashy AND washed out. She’s such a pretty girl, but she’s lost behind all that makeup.

  • magpie says:

    nay from me
    its too much IMO

  • daisy says:

the lips would have been fab with a neutral eye but she looks like a hooker with both!!

  • Aphrodite says:

    Like the hair though!

  • ShellBelle says:

blegh. The lips would have been fine alone but the eyes are a disaster. Did we learn nothing from the 80s? She looks like a zombie.

  • Twinkletoes says:

Awful. One of the other would have been fine, but both is a disaster.

  • Breige says:

I saw this in a magazine the other day and thought it was horrible. If she had neutral eyes it would look much better!

  • Kirstie says:

In fairness now, though I don’t *hate* the eye makeup, what WOULD it go with?

    excellent red lippy, however

  • razzle dazzle says:

She looks scary! Zombie is the word!

  • JoanieBubbles says:

Nein! This is all wrong, unless it’s Halloween.

  • sweetie1 says:

LOVE the red lippy…but what the hell is going on with the eyes? Way too much going on under the eyes even if she didn’t have red lips. A simple gold eyeshadow would have been elegant & fabulous.

  • ceci says:

yeah i agree I don’t like the eye make up, too much shadow below the eyes for my liking. I think the red lipstick is lovely on her though, she should use that more often with subtle eye makeup

  • Glamazon says:

She looks a bit Edward Scissorhands meets Morticia Addams.

  • ShellBelle says:

Glamazon – Edward Scissorhands – exactly! Was racking my brains trying to figure out who she reminded me of, that’s it!

  • MontyC says:

    Way too much.

    Do one, not both.

  • MilkyMoo says:

Perhaps the eyes would go with a pale (but not deathly pale) pink or nude colour?

  • Glamazon says:

I think the only colour to wear with that eye make-up would be a cerise pink lippy – something a bit Cheryl Cole. Pale or nude would might take it right in to Corpse Bride territory.

  • MilkyMoo says:

I agree that a very pale lip colour would be bad – I was thinking more along the lines of MAC Creme Cup lipstick, which is a light Barbie pink, if you know what I mean.

  • ShellBelle says:

Incidentally, does anyone know the name/brand of that pink lippie that Cheryl wears?

  • Grace London says:

    It’s Elvira!

Sheer rosy lippie, that’s what I pair with my punched in the eye/Tim Burton eye looks.

  • MJ says:

holy crap batman, she looks like the joker

  • Evelyn says:

It’s a no from me. She looks like she’s dressed for Halloween.
    Evelyn

  • BBG says:

Would give her the role of Queen in True Blood over Evan Rachel Wood any day, even purely based on the make-up, not the acting.

Other than that, I think for someone who admitted in an interview to prefer wearing no slap at all, she carries this off very well. As much as this can be ‘worn’ by anyone, she does a fairly good job at it. I would break into hysterics.

  • Renee says:

    Beetlejuice, anyone?

  • PinkPanther says:

The shadow is a bit much below the eye but feck it, I’m giving her a thumbs up. Love to see Hollywood types pushing the boundaries and not doing same old nude lips/smokey eye look. It’s fun to experiment -and there’s nowt wrong with beetlejuice :)

  • Sha Sha says:

I’m f**ked so..I always wear my makeup like this at night may i add…scary and as the night goes on..i.e drink get drunk it gets scarierand scarier..i love my Chanel red lipstck and my goth eyes..now i have to decide groan..

  • Venus says:

Em, no thanks its freekin scary :(

  • cj says:

    I’ll say it again: Yuck!

  • PinkPanther says:

Sha Sha-if you like it stick with it! Sure it would be pretty boring world if we all played it safe and looked the same

  • Kirstie says:

Oh here I frequently break the lips/lids ‘rule’
    rules me arse.
but this doesn’t actually suit her.

  • Speccy says:

No, this looks all wrong, like an identikit put together by a 7 year old. The lips are great and the eyes aren’t that bad, but together it’s awful. Does nothing for her (Channelling my mother)

  • Sha Sha says:

thanks girlys ..to be honest it does work for me,i think the trick with any risky make-up is wear it and be confident with it.I have had pink/scarlet hair or 6 years now and i frequently have complete strangers coming up to me and complimenting it and also saying they wish they had the “noive” its just hair peeps..do it!!

  • MiamiMortimer says:

I like it, but she’s way too pale. She needs serious contouring and a light shade of blush. Otherwise, I like the eyes and lips-they make a very definite statement though!!!!!

  • Renee says:

She’s a pretty girl and this look does her no favours!!

  • Lola says:

if she had a bit less on her inner lids and a bit less dragged out towards the end of her eyebrows then i think it would look great…i love dark eyes with red lips! she could even go a bit darker…

  • Anneml says:

Draculatastic! In fairness the red lips are great and very well done, paired with nothing else they would have looked glamorous. The eyes, the eyes, it looks like the stuff off her top eyelid has slipped off on to her bottom lid (rubbed eyes maybe). All in all I think 2 different people did her makeup; one for the top of her face, one for the bottom, neither was allowed check what the other was doing and they weren’t talking to each other!

  • Gee Gee says:

Loving the hair and the lips – but not with the eyes!!! No way!

  • pink says:

she have bold features so she need not so much make up. she also have beautiful hair. she must be suits black, white and primary color. she maybe she doesn’t suits a loud pattern. she is more suits little flower pattern.

  • MsSittingatherdeskandpretendingtowork says:

Maybe the camera flash is too strong and wiping out any skin colour, but her eyebrows are looking too fluffy(?) to match the look.

  • KTeacup says:

I like it! im sick of makeup “rules”! the only time you can really go overboard on makeup is during the day…when the night comes – go wild! there is no right or wrong way to wear makeup!

  • KTeacup says:

sorry i meant to say the only time you can be accused of going overboard!

  • BerG says:

No, no, noooo this is all wrong.

  • Catzi says:

    Ick!!

What waz she thinking? she looks way better wit da makeup she wears on gossip girl. BTW does anyone know the brand of blusher she wears on Gossip Girl?
