Zeno and the Art of Acne Treatment

by Kirstie, February 12th, 2007 in Gadgets, Books & Accessories, Skincare |

zenoFollowing on from Saturday’s useless beauty gadgets, here’s one that sounds like it’s actually pretty good. Kind of crazy alright, but effective. It’s called Zeno, and it’s a “Clinically proven portable, hand-held rechargeable medical device for at-home treatment of individual acne inflammatory spots“.

Ye’wha’? Basically it’s a yoke that heats up that you use to zap mild and moderate acne. The heat kills the spot and bobs yer uncle. If you’d like some science to go with my wonderful explanation, then Zeno say that it heats “an acne lesion to a pre-set temperature range known to generate heat shock response. Heat shock response is a reaction bacteria have to heat whereby they transcript a number of genes and activate heat-shock proteins. These heat-shock proteins participate in the bacteria’s death by causing the bacteria to self-destruct“.

If I was a teenage boy I’d be saying ‘huhuhh COOL’, right about now. I’ll let you in on a little secret, I am saying ‘huhuhuhuhhhhh COOL’ at this precise moment. Oh yes. And if you’d get an equally teenage satisfaction from Zapping with a Zeno, then you can order online for the princely sum of ‘only’ €185 plus extra for shipping.

It looks like a mobile phone doesn’t it? And the science is reassuringly baffling. But 185 squids!!

hmmmmm! I’m not too sure about this one…If I remember correctly from my biochemistry classes many, many, many moons ago, heat shock proteins actually protect the cell from destruction, they don’t contribute the cells death. Of course I could be completely wrong, this was a long time ago!
Interestingly, heat shock proteins are also used in cancer research: if abnormal proteins are found in a sick cell (cancer cell) the HSPs take them and put them on the outside of the cell, which illicits a strong immune response so that the immune system knows the cell is sick and kills it. So the thought is that cancer vaccines could be created, whereby a ‘dilute’ version of the cancer is injected into a person, the immune system kicks into action, then further down the line if the person was to be infected with full strength cancer it wouldn’t develop.

So, HSPs, good at fighting cancer, useless at fighting spots, or something…

I saw that gadget in Spain recently, and they had a trial pack for about 30 Euros, so maybe that’s the way to go if someone wants to try it out.
