A handy cut out and keep guide to Cheryls tattoos
Cheryl Cole is famously plastered in tatts – five of them at time of writing.
- Back of neck: Mrs Cole inscription (something we can see her living to regret)
- Big yoke on arse (unidentified pattern)
- Butterfly on lower back
- Band around thigh – treble clefs and flowerbuds
- Hand – Maoiri design
She has spawned a million copycats and apparently the craze for young wans coming in to “Get a Cheryl” is wrecking tattooists heads. After all they see themselves as artists and are seriously affronted by their profession being cheapened by a Girls Alound singer. Get a grip ink merchants eh?
But now even Cheryl is said to be having second thoughts. “A source close to the singer” said she is worried that her thigh tattoo doesn’t fit in with her image and she is considering having laser treatment to get it removed.
I think she is so damn gorgeous (after all she was the out and out winner of our Girl Crush poll) that she could have anything tattooed that she liked – but I can understand how she wants to move away from that whole fake tan, hair extensions, chavvy, footballers wife image … oh wait … Now I see where you might be going with this Cheryl
But what do you think? Should it stay or should it go?

I say get rid of them all!!! They look sooooo tacky! Why would you do this to yourself?!
I hate the one on her thigh and her arse. But that’s just me!
the one on her leg is just awful..what was she thinking!!! but i do like the one on her hand!
oh god onli seen the one on her ass now…absolutely horrible
I don’t have a girl crush on her – she’s too too perfect for my taste.
I too really hate the one on her arse and thigh. The others are bearable but will look awful when she’s older – the one on her back will take ages to get off as well.
I love tattoos but only decent ones – hers are skanky looking. They suit her though – just becasue Simon Cowell decided to make her his latest cash cow and give her a glossy new exterior and some media training doesn’t change what she really is
harsh PP!! the one on her hand is nice but if you were to get something like that you’d want to make sure you never wanted to work in an office professional environment. if she was ever to put on weight the one on her backside would stretch horribly.
Is it true you cannot get an epidural if you get one there on your back? If I ever give birth, i’d need something to get through it!
I was suppose to get a tatoo as a birthday present a few years back but of course couldn’t decide what I wanted or where….
There are 2 trainers at our bootcamp who have fab tatoos on their calves but this look only suits men IMO. Another girl has a twisted rope tatooed around her ankle and it’s really awful just awful.
so in general I’m not against them but thought has to be out into them.
Pink – meeeeeeee owwweeee or whatever the sound is that a panther makes……
but I agree 110%
Gotta say I love Cheryl…
Don’t like the ones on the lower half of her body…
I haaaate the one on her thigh! She should definitely get it off! Didn’t know she had one on her arse though.
The rest are more than a little tacky. I can see how they’re not really fitting with the new image! :/
I’m just very cynical about the whole Cheryl Cole thing. She is beautiful but until Cowell got his grubby paws on her she was beating up toilet attendants and bad mouthing a host of other female singers in the press every week. Not exactly classy. I think these tattoos remind everyone of the real Cheryl and not the one SC created.
Pink Panther – I hear ya.
The words ‘Cheryl Cole’ and ‘Classy’ will never ever been seen in the same sentence.
‘Chav’ and ‘Nasty’, yes.
I don’t mind the ones on her body too much – it’s the hand one I can’t stand. But when she gets older they’re all going to look terrible
I think cheryl has just grown up a bit, that’s really the nub of it. she was young and stupid and chavvy, and now she’s a bit older and isn’t. so much.
I’m not a fan of Cheryl Cole and I hate the way that the more unsavoury aspects of her past have been airbrushed out now that she is Slimon Cowell’s little protegé.
I absolutely hate tattoos. Nothing cheapens someone’s look quite as dramatically as the aul tramp stamps. The one on her thigh is particularly offensive though.
Am laughing at the thought that tattoo artists are getting all precious about their *cough* art. Brilliant. Sure we’ll skin Lemmy from Motorhead (or similar) and mount his inky pelt in the Saatchi Gallery. Damien Hirst eat yer heart out (or preserve in formaldehyde, if you prefer)
Awful, awful, awful!! She’s a beautiful girl but I really don’t think she’ll ever be as classy as she would like to think she is! Posh is the same too…trying to be someone she ain’t!
Ah there are tattoo artists out there that are considered trueartists. Some of them do amazing work – the detail is incredible.
Everyone has unsavoury parts of their past they would like to see airbrushed. I certainly have a certain period of time I would like to be erased completely
LMW – We all have those!
But did we tatoo ourselves into oblivion in the process?
I wouldn’t mind – but this girl has an amazing face and figure (too skinny at the moment, but still always looks well), so she has no need to tatoo herself into oblivion! (to steal Monty’s phrase above, sorry Monty
I see nothing wrong with one discreet tattoo on your body. Especially if it holds significance for you and isn’t just meaningless. I think its a little harsh to say they cheapen you.
there are defo tatoo artists out there that are amazing artists..ive a huge interest in them, but dont have any, and some of the work that ive seen done is absoultely incredible – jaw dropping some of it..just cause they paint on skin instead of canvas, doesnt mean that they are true artists…
Making bad choices doesn’t have much to do with getting tattoos. Just because you have a them doesn’t mean you regret things any less than the next person.
I have seen some very beautiful tattoos and can see why people getting them. I haven’t got one myself but thats because I haven’t seen anything i love.
Angel – I totally agree. I think it’s when they’re obviously done to draw attention to a part of the body (that the “owner” wants to show off) that they can be cheap looking.
i think to say that a tatooist (sp) aren’t artist’s isn’t very fair the amount of detail and effort taht goes into a tatoo can be incredible. i prefer when tatoo’s mean something i want to get one but i dont know where. i was going to get one when i was suppose to be going off traveling but that fell through. anyway art is subjective
At least she doesn’t have one of those piercings that stretch your lobes!!! Eek. She’s one of few that can get away with the tats; however, still say ditch ‘em esp the one on her neck!
I do think her tattoos look a lot better than Amy Winehouse’s! I never even realised Cheryl had tattoos before today.
Monty – We may not have “tattooed ourselves into oblivion” but that’s not to say we didn’t make questionable choices during those periods. If Cheryl got over-tattooed when she was young and foolish, isn’t that better than, say, over-drinking or taking drugs? I think whatever gets you through the dark and into the light, without endangering you, is a personal choice and I don’t think you can pass judgement on that. I put on about two stone during a bad patch in my life, and I would always have been somebody who take very good care of my figure – but I’ve rectified that, and I could have done worse, I could have drunk myself into oblivion. If she’s looking to rectify questionable choices, you have to credit her with acknowledging that those choices might not have been very smart in the first place. It takes a lot of maturity to acknowledge that. She’s only 26, after all!
I would prefer these tattos (arse one excepted of course) to those of Angelina Jolie with all those co-ordinates on her back, she’ll have to become mighty tall to accommodate anymore if she plans on adopting a few more!!
meow girls.
lay off Cheryl -she is only a young wan for gods sake!
and nothing wrong with a tattoo or two – sure its like wearing make-up or a nice dress or a horrible dress etc. Just another way of expressing ourselves. I understand its not for everyone but its not fair to slate people who do have them.
I like Cheryl
i have a tattoo in a place that is rarely seen, and while I wouldn’t get that particular one now, I still like it as it reminds me of a certain phase of my life. They really are a personal choice. It’s not hurting anyone.
I like tatts actually
But i think some people can pull them off better than others (and i don’t think gender has anything to do with it). But I don’t really like the ones that Cheryl has but that’s my personal taste to be honest.
Each to their own i guess…
I remember a nurse I know telling me about a new Nurses Aid who started on her ward (the elderly ward).
This guy interviewed very well and passed the medical etc. He arrived into work and was given the short sleeve uniform to wear but his 2 arms were covered in tatoos.
All the old people were afraid of him but would only say it to the nurses (cos they were afriad). She and all the rest of the nurses would try and explain that he was a lovely fella but they were still a bot afraid. Also new people came on the ward every week so it was an never ending circle.
He was assigned to A and E for a finish.
Iviva – weird! I have a bessie mate with many absolutely fantastic tatts who’s a nurse and has never had a problem that I know of. His ones are incredible, completely amazing, Japanese-influenced stuff. Also have another mate with the best, most precise one I have ever seen: the international space station rendered in blue ink. It is absolutely mind-blowingly well done.
The problem is far too many people have complete bollox drawn onto them, which does look cheap and nasty. Well done, they’re amazing.
also, tribal symbols and chinese characters = gag.
Oh dear – yeah the Chinese characters that were taken from the internet or a book that the person hasn’t taken the time to properly research. Like some characters can mean different things in different contexts so they may have ended up with a meaning nothing like the one they intended.
The Japanese influenced tatts sound very interesting Kirstie! A friend of mine back in Oz has one of her calves tattoed with flowers in a japanese style and it looks gorgeous and totally suits her
I think certain tattoos are done to death…a friend has a chinese symbol which was meant to mean hope and actually means buddha. Same person has a fairy on her ankle which I think is horrible.
Another friend got a heart in the same shape as one she got off her grandparents when she was a child on her back but you’d only see it if she had a backless dress on – she got it so that if she ever lost the pendant, the sentimental value won’t be.
If there is a reason behind it, a story for years down the road, then maybe I’d get one. But some people pull off the more common ones really well.
Hermione, great way to put it. I’d rather tattoo myself into oblivion and not have gone down the drugs route than go down it and not be able to pull myself out…
Yes, you can get an epidural when you have your lower back tattooed.
I must note not to show any of you my tattoos, by the sounds of it ye’d all be horribly offended!
I have to agree Hermione!
Tattoo artists design some really special intricate work which takes a lot of skill. I find it strange that people wouldn’t call them artists and yet many people would happily put a cheap canvas with a splodge of paint on the wall and call it art. I would imagine that some tattoo artists hate doing the barbed wire, celtic bands or chinese symbols on people but if that is what the client wants…
And I don’t see the difference between colouring your hair and colouring your body. The ‘permanency’ doesn’t make a difference – some women will spend the rest of their lives colouring their hair.
I have a small tattoo on my back done nearly 20 years ago before it all became so fashionable. It can’t be seen unless I want it to. I have never once regretted it. Personally I don’t like ones on legs or ankles or in really obvious places but I don’t dislike them on others…its personal choice and I respect that.
jenizzle – can’t speak for anyone else but i don’t get offended by people’s choice of tatt – there’s just some things i like and some i don’t. But as i said in an earlier post – that’s purely down to personal taste and at the end of the day you can do whatever you like with your body
It love the one on her hand i want one like it but in colour i also lovee the one on her back but hate the one on her legd and arse Lmaoo. Looks cheap dont no why she would do that she has a nice body but i didnt no she had that may tattos :L xx
I personally love Cheryl Cole however i think that her thigh tattoo is dreadful and the one on her arse too are horrible. I do like the one on her hand though i think she did well with not making it look very chavvy!
By the sound of it, there are a lot of very jealous people out there. Making very personal, and to be honest, spiteful comments about Cheryl. What has she done to you, apart from look better than you, make more money than you and be more successful than you? Jealousy is a very destructive emotion. Let it go, get on with your life and leave the poor girl alone. Tattoos are very personal things and people don’t get them done for other people to look at, they get them done for themselves. We don’t care if you don’t like them, because we do!
Well i dont think there is anything wrong with her tattoos, each to there own and i think its awful that people do say bad things about them and make her feel like she should have some removed. I personally love tattoo’s but feel there is a bit of a stigma with females having larger peices, i have a japanese thigh peice and i dont care if people dont like it, i had it done for me. And there are alot of amazing atrists out there that tattoo, its not just a case os going over a stencil, it is a talent and a gift well used.
[...] and placement thereof a lot of thought. I have been wanting one on my wrist or even hand (a la Cheryl Cole) for a long time and took into account how it would affect me professionally. I feel, if need be, I [...]
chavtastic!
They look awful IMO. The one on her hand not so bad, though I think it’s a mistake to get a hand tat as they start to look crap after a while, the lines become faded and blurred. The rest are cheap and tacky looking. I love tattoos when they’re done properly i.e. by a pro. not a hack “scratcher” and there’s thought put into getting a custom designed one, not a piece of flash crap like these.
Chavtastic indeed lol!
She’s stunning but her tattoos are awful. She’s very petit and they seem to swamp her.
i muxt say i dont like the tatoo on her thigh but i like the ones on her lower back and hand
i though that if people got tatoos it would poison there blood
poor cheryl everyone bitching about her on here
I love this girl to bits and think her tattoos are beautiful, especially the one on her thigh.
