Sounds bizzaro, but it’s true. According to my swotty economic readings, vending machines are set to become the latest craze in beauty purchasing. They’ve already been in situ in the States for a couple of years, with with names like Elizabeth Arden and Coty packing their products into snazzy new machines.
Ever since vending machines evolved into beasts capable of taking electronic payment cards, instead of whatever change you had lying around at the bottom of your handbag, the possibilities for them expanded. Ipods, cameras and champagne are all available already (along with the staples: black liquid optimistically called coffee, out of date Kit Kats, Tic Tacs and condoms).
While I wouldn’t particularly fancy buying foundation from the old fag machine down in the local I can see the advantages. Run out of mascara or lipgloss after the chemist is shut? The vending machine could be a veritable life saver.

Can you imagine if these were in pubs you’d wake up in the morning with a bag full of makeup and an empty bank account!!!
I saw vend-a-flowers in NY airport…romantic or what?!
In Japan vending machines are everywhere, on street corners, and you can buy bottles of wine and all sorts. Nuts to our eyes, but it makes a lot of sense.
Can you imagine vending machines selling wine here? They’d be smashed to bits in no time!
I think the make-up thing is a good idea though. I’ve often forgotten stuff like concealer on a night out, so this would come in very handy for me!
Drunken purchases… bad bad bad…
Think it’s a good idea if you want to avoid the hard-sell which so often accompanies a visit to the make-up counter. I’d probably end up spending less if I could buy from a vending machine.
Could be kinda handy to get make up from a vending machine. I was in Boots yesterday and most of the make up had been opened and the eye shadowed had been smashed up. If you got it from a machine at least you could be sure nobody had been pawing at it.
bionic laura – good point! Plus a MAC vending machine could never be rude to you or give you the wrong shade of foundation on purpose.
Or thinking about it – do you think certain brands would make their vending machines to be snooty/hard to use/dispense hideous shades designed to completely not suit you?
Maybe some vending machines would assess your credit rating before they deign to let you view the products. Lord knows this is how you feel when you get the once over by BT’s staff!
Oh god I can just imagine myself the first time ill come across one of these ‘sure ill get something to see if it works’ haha!! And if I was on the wrong side of tipsy I can imagine waking up with a bag full of stuff!!!!
Can you imagine the queues into the ladies toilet if one of these were in there…the men wouldn’t know what’s going on!!!
a snooty vending machine! hah
I remember seeing one of these in JFK airport in New York – it was selling face creams or the likes, can’t quite remember cos I thought it was a bit ridiculous!
Don’t see any reason why you wouldn’t!
I’m so uncoordinated, when i go to a vending machine I always press the wrong button so I end up with something I don’t want. What happens if I buy something v expensive from an Elizabeth Arden machine and want to return it? Twould be a nightmare!
I got the ferry from Larne recently and there was a vending machine in the toilets there that was selling knickers, and then in Scotland, there was a vending machine in the pub selling edible knickers! So, if there’s a market for them, then make-up vending machines should very well!
Good idea if you have bought the product before but who’s going to give you advice and tell you if a product you haven’t tried before is any good?
I think it would be a good idea if you were out and you needed a quick touch up with a dab of concealer and you forgot your make-up bag or something.
Couldn’t see myself buying expensive products from one. Definitely wouldn’t buy something from a machine that I haven’t tried or seen before. I like to see the exact colours and consistency of a product because I hate being ripped off, I’m a student so can’t be left with a useless product, won’t get another one right away.
Good idea for emergencies but I wouldn’t buy my expensive products from a machine.
