How to: summer makeup changes

Cocktail Smiles

When the sun comes a shinin it’s only goigous and all that but it does kind of leave us in no mans land when it comes to makeup.

Change the base
You’ll need to be changing the colour of that base if you’re fake tanning your face and/or the rest of your body. After all a white face and a tanned bod is not a good look. But if you don’t want to splash out there are some great products out there to add to your foundation to get the shade just right. Try mixing some of this Clinique Self Sun Face Gel in with your foundation to summer up the shade. I can’t believe how well this is working and I’m a total convert now. Maybelline Bronzing Booster Drops are also ace for this purpose.

Lighten up
Switch to a lighter base - or a tinted mosituriser if you’ve got great skin. If you’re going on holiday somewhere hot you’ll probably find that foundation slides off your face no matter what you do - so why not just go with something like the tinted version of La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF 50. Even out your complexion and get maximum protection, this is what I use on holliers. And if you’re not sure in which order you should apply sunscreen and foundation check here.

Waterproof it
Waterproof mascara is the business on holidays as is waterproof eyeliner. Try Max Factor Masterpiece or Rimmel Sexy Curves - both do good waterproof versions.

Crease less
Non crease eyeshadow or eye primers come into their own in hot weather. Try the new Estee Lauder Doublewear eyeshadows and liners to make sure everything stays in place. This is a great time to experiment with colour too.

Bronzer
And now the most fun part - bronzer. Choose one which is not too flat and has a touch of shimmer for summer. Bobbi Brown Shimmer brick is the business for summer and you can pick up lovely mutihued bronzers from most of the makeup ranges. Check out some of the bronzers we’ve reviewed.

Nails
Don’t forget your piggys - bright colours look great in summer sandals. Have a look at some of the great neon shades that are on trend this season.

Now over to you - any tips, dos or don’ts?

What’s in your bathroom cabinet?

I love all those “What’s in your fridge” features in magazines (I’ve started a thread in the Forums too so we can have our own). Even though you know the celebrity has just cleaned out said fridge and filled it full of lettuce, grapes and skimmed milk.

I mean if they actually left in the honest to god contents of the fridge it would probably read more like this: a mouldy cucumber; out of date yogurts; a bottle of flat coke; a bottle of pino grigio; a half eaten carton of cold chinese and a jar of Hellmans.

Ok hands up - that’s my fridge. There are some actual edibles in there too though - I swear.

But back to the matter at hand. I wish they would do a “what’s in your bathroom cabinet” while they’re at it. I’d love to see the real creams and lotions and potions used by the Z list celebs that take part in these features. What brand of deodorant do they use, do they have an electric toothbrush and do they take their makeup off with wipes?

My bathroom cabinet is stuffed full of moisturiser, body lotions and cleansers and I’m always chopping and changing.  And I’ve revealed before about all the horrors that I had in there.  But I’ve had a major clear out since then.

What about you? What have you got in there?

Makeup bag takes the weekend off

beauty-its-not-just-a-job.jpg

When I got up on Saturday morning little did I know of the impending doom facing me over the weekend.

Dear readers, I had accidentally left my makeup bag in Work the day before. Not even my spare makeup bag, not the makeup bag with a few bits and pieces in it - but the whole shebang, the Main bag.

Now the Beaut.ie Crab has never crept into my bursting makeup bag, but if he had, his beady eyes on stalks would have spotted all my can’t live withouts - the Mac foundation, the Stila eyeshadows, the selection of mascaras, the Smashbox blushers and lippies… the Bobbi Brown gel liners… oh I can’t go on…

“Noooooooooooooooooooooo!” I wailed upon realising what had happened.

“Sure what’s the problem?” said the husband. “You’ve about ten tons of stuff hanging around the place. Use some of that.”

So bravely I tried to make the most of it. Lipstick and eyeshadow were grand - it was the base that got me unstuck. On Saturday a friend asked me was I ill, because I was the colour of the tomb with black circles under my eyes - hmmm so that’s why I don’t use that foundation any more I thought and threw it in the bin. And that concealer clearly doesn’t work either. On Sunday, mineral foundation caked around my nose in the most horrible way and the bronzer I used made me look as though a dirty protest were playing itself out on my cheeks. On Monday I was the embodiment of a satsuma with pink cheeks.

I wasn’t in Work til Tuesday. I rang up on Monday morning at 9.01am to check that the beloved bag was actually safe on my desk. A male colleague answered the phone. Feckity feck, I knew I was in for slagging so.

“Will you check if I left… my makeup bag on my desk” I said in a little voice

He returned to the phone sniggering “The bright green one with “Beauty is not just a job… it’s an adventure!” written on it, is it?”

I’ll never hear the end of this.

bababducks makeup atash

Ah, how we’ve missed the crab. Inspired by the kindly Capital One credit card crab, he wants to know what’s in your makeup bag. He’s not had a chance to have a goo in anyones bits now for ages, so he was especially pleased to see the stash he’s getting to rootle around in today. It’s Babaduck’s ‘basic’ kit, apparently (basic!? Jaysis, we wonder what advanced looks like!) and it’s a little something like this:

English Mum’s Beauty picks

Aphrodite’s recent Irish Times feature got me a-thinking about all the talented, funny and downright readable women bloggers that I read all the time. So in homage to the lady-bloggers of our fair isle, we’ve decided to ask a few of them a question or five about their beauty routines. We knew they’d have a few gems to share - and we weren’t wrong.

First up is English Mum in Ireland, a transplanted 30-something UK lass who moved to Co. Cavan a couple of years ago with husband and kids.  While it can’t have been an easy transition for her to make, her blog has always shone with positivity regarding her new surroundings, as well as a lot of wit and humour. And she loves products, so she was the ideal person to kick off this new series. Take it away, English Mum!

What age were you when you first started getting into products? What sparked it?

“My Disreputable Dad is a perfumer and I’ve been surrounded by gorgeous scents and beautiful packaging since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I remember wafting around in Guerlain’s Mitsouko at junior school, oddly enough. He bought loads of testers and new products home as well, so I started experimenting with make-up quite early too”.

The Crab Needs You!

crab

Ladies, the beaut.ie crab (inspired by the kindly Capital One Credit Card Crab, Fact Fanz) has been languishing in his shell for too long. He needs some fresh meat. Er, victims. Er, I mean, VOLUNTEERS.

Seriously ladies, the crab is really nice. He scuttles into your makeup bag and takes a gander at the contents. It’s fun! He’s had a look at looooads of bags already, and sure he’s only dying to see what new-season slap some o’ yiz have.

So get sending a high res pic of your makeup bag, plus a description of the contents to info@beaut.ie, and you could be one of the lucky lasses picked for the scuttly scrutiny of our crustacean pal!

Beaut.ie Crab Flys into Cathy’s bag

Monday, September 24th, 2007

catherines bag

There’s nothing we like more than a hoke in someone elses makeup bag. I love the nosiness of it - seeing what people buy, use and lug round with them is always really interesting, especially when you spot something you also love and can’t be without.

The crab is a crustacean after my own heart, and he has chosen Cathyfly’s bag for his next investigation. Take it away, Monsieur Crabbe:

Cathyfly tells us that “as seems to be the case with your other readers, my daily bag holds but a fraction of the overall collection but I do tend to use the same products every day for work“, so that’s mostly what we’re seeing here.

  • Bag - Nifty Sephora bag, great size for the basics, a bit scruffy now though
  • Various brushes, mostly from Sephora
  • Max Factor Masterpiece Max mascara (further to Beaut.ie hype!)
  • Benefit Hoola bronzer
  • Benefit High Beam (usually use at night time only)
  • Lancome Magie Blush (mousse - loving this at the mo)
  • Pout Plump - need a new one!
  • Armani Luminous Silk foundation - new purchase, another Beaut.ie recommendation and I love it, shade 5.5
  • Revlon lip gloss in Nude Lustre - think this was an early Beaut.ie tip, are you seeing a pattern here…
  • Sephora eye shadow pencil, dark metallic purple (left over from a night out!)
  • No. 7 eye shadow in Magnolia, this is ancient but it’s the best matte base colour I’ve tried
  • Armani lip shimmer in shade 21
  • Good old Rimmel black kohl eye liner pencil
  • Armani eyeshadow palette (got this on Swap Siopa!)
  • Benefit Bo-ing concealer
  • Benefit Brow-Zings

After typing all that out for us, Cathyfly had some commentary:

Lessons I can learn from the list above:
1. Benefit should be paying me commission
2. Beaut.ie is costing me a fortune! ;)
..but sure isn’t being stunningly beautiful every day a small price to pay…;)

We agree wholeheartedly!

If you’d like the crab to have a poke through your stuff, we’d be delighted to facilitate you - send in a pic of your slap, (as high res as possible, please!) plus a description of the contents to info@beaut.ie, and mark it for The Crabs attention.

The Crab Examines a BEE-utiful Bag

Thursday, September 13th, 2007
bag

This one has been langishing inside the crab’s shell for some time, and he’s finally decided to share. This time, Bee’s bag is up for scrutiny. “I got a new camera so I’m only looking for an excuse to take photos“, she told us. “Snapping my makeup bag is better than snapping the guys in the office - I’ve already been using them for target practice“, she laughed. So, what’s inside?

L-R at the back:
Clinique freebie - lip glosswear (07 Air Kiss) and high impact mascara (01Black) in one.
Optrex clear eyes
Pout Plump in Caramel (my newest purchase and I love it)
Lulu Guinness make up bag. I have the big one too ;)
Fold away hair brush
Vicks inhaler - great for flying
Burts Bees lip balm

And at the front…
Tesco glass nail file
Sally Hansen Cuticle oil pen
Hair gripper
Clinique freebie - mirror in a pouch
Match Sticks (mini tit tape strips for clothes)
Refillable Perfume bottle a mate got me in Sephora in the US (filled with Lacoste Touch Of Pink).

She also tells us she has Laura Mercier foundation in the bottom of the bag but forgot to include it here.

So ladies, whadda reckon? I’m intrigued by the 2-in-1 Clinque freebie - what a deadly idea!
