Emma Stone in Gangster Squad: get retro gorgeous. N.B. Ryan Gosling not included

The Oscars are almost upon us and we all know what that means. More fabulous dresses, breath-taking bling and killer hair and make-up looks than you can shake a stick at.  Oh and I think a few people get prizes or something too?

While we wait with baited breath to see who forgot to use waterproof mascara this year, we’ve taken a look at one of the most breath-taking movie make-up looks of 2013.

BFF-of-our-dreams/total ridebag Emma Stone had us girl crushing all over again last month, as Grace Faraday in Gangster Squad. While her damsel-in-distress act wasn't a hit with the critics, her red lips and retro hairdo were winners for us.

To get Grace’s glow, step away from the spray tan, Hollywood glamour is all about accentuating your natural gifts. Once you’ve applied a true-to-you tone foundation, top it with a translucent powder (vintage style compact optional, but how cute is this refillable compact, below, from Estée Lauder?)

Amp up the brow factor with a slightly darker than normal brow powder, try MAC Brow Duo, and line over your lids with a long-lasting gel liner such as Make Up Forever’s Aqua Creamliner. If you’ve a big night ahead – Vanity Fair/Elton John, I’m available if you’re low on party guests – thick velvety lashes will add extra wow factor to this look. I never get sick of the doe eyes I get from Eylure’s Cheryl lashes.

The key for every budding Jessica Rabbit though is tons of lipstick and of course, matching nails. Hit up the beauty counter to secure your own spot on shades, though for sheer glamour, I love *Dior Rouge Lipstick in Ara Red paired with Dior Vernis Nail Lacquer in Red Royalty.  Or for a more affordable take, dupe the trend with Rimmel.

Next up, the gruaig. For an easy take on this look, pick up a gorgeous slide, like one of these little beauties from Accessorise. Fix it at the nape of your neck a little behind your ear, or up a little higher a la Emma, then gather the rest of your locks around to the opposite side.

If you fancy getting the full vintage set-curl look, use a 25mm curling iron (Jose Eber wands are great for staying power), pinning up each curl as you go. One you’re done, leave it to set for 15 minutes, then take out the clips. Very gently brush the curls out with a paddle brush and fix with a soft hair spray like Moroccan Oil. Katharine Hepburn, eat your heart out.

Ryan Gosling is obviously a key accessory - but I'm sorry, I can't help you with that little request!

So what do you reckon, do you think you’ll give this Hollywood, California look your own Hollywood, Wicklow spin?
