Beaut.ie How To: Rescue Misshapen Brushes

brushes

They might be much-loved, can't-live-without, and often expensive tools, but make-up brushes sometimes don't get the love they deserve when it comes to keeping them looking and performing their best. Squishing them into make-up bags, pencil cases, or drawers, leaving them upended in a container for easy access, or just heavy use can leave bristles all bent out of shape.

It's dead easy to coax brushes back to their former glory.

Start by washing them. Lather a small amount of mild shampoo or brush cleaner with warm water in the palm of your hand and swirl bristles gently in it to cleanse without further misshaping them up. Rinse and repeat until the water runs clear.

Then - very gently - shake out excess water, and use your fingers to gently reform the brush shape. Leave them away from direct heat to dry, and turn every half hour.

  • For fluffy brushes: fluff the bristles against your hand while the brush is still damp, and again once dry.
  • For flat-headed brushes: fold a paper towel, wrap it firmly around the ferrule - the metal piece that joins the handle and head - and bristles, and use tape to hold it in place.
