Base-ic Instinct: Three Budget Friendly Foundations We Love

At the risk of sounding like an auld one, I remember the time when you couldn’t get a decent base without spending upwards of twenty quid. Just couldn’t be done. (Didn’t stop me trying, mind you, and I’ve the ghost-face or tangoed pics to prove it.) Those days are now long gone, and you can find

Of course, there are still plenty of lacklustre products on the stands – so we’ve done the hard work for you, and rooted out three high-street heros that deserve to grace your face.

If you, like me, are ‘blessed’ with oily or combination skin, the Catrice Infinite Matt foundation is a marvel. It feels quite thick as you apply it but blends out to a lovely, medium coverage that’s matte but not flat, feels comfortable to wear and lasts all day. The glass bottle with pump also belies the teeny tiny price tag of just €6.99.

On drier skin types, the relaunched Rimmel Match Perfection, €10.49, would be a brilliant pick. We loved the original (check out our review) for its radiance boosting technology and fresh, dewy finish; this new version comes with all that and an extra dollop of hydration, too.

Good as this is, there’s another Rimmel newbie that I’m loving even more. I’m so taken with the finish of the Lasting Finish 25 HR Nude Foundation, €8.99, that I routinely reach for it in favour of spendier high-end brands.

It’s gorgeous: great, glowy coverage that just looks like great skin, and excellent lasting power to boot. Because of the long-wear claims this is probably not for the driest of complexions, but it feels lovely and comfortable on my dehydrated bits while keeping the shine at bay elsewhere.

The downside, of course, to most budget ranges is the limited shade selection – but if you can match your skintone in any of these ranges, we reckon you’re on to a winner.
