I've finally accepted that if I don't want white streaks through my hair I have to do something about it. As in, I have to pay to get it dyed professionally (or pay for paint for the walls and white spirit for the floors and a DIY kit if I do it myself. I'm a splasher.) I don't want to, but vanity prevails.
I am extremely low maintenace when it comes to my gruaige. I have a lot of trouble with it: greasy scalp, dry ends, heat damage, unruliness, and I tend to wait for far too long to get it spruced up at the salon. So, it's usually tied up in an unfashionable bun (I don't know how to do the messy-not-messy cool ones) and off I go about my business.
Despite this, I experience hair envy at least five times a day. How I wish I could stand to get up half an hour earlier to run a straightener through my tresses and maybe a bit of serum at the ends. Wouldn't it be great if I could afford to get my hair cut regularly and get a blow-dry for nights out? An awful lot of women in Ireland have very good hair, I've discovered; or at least they look after it and spend time on it.
I've also discovered that there's a bit of pressure on women to have a 'complete' look at events and occasions. Perfect makeup, stylish outfit and groomed hair. If you don't tick all three boxes (which I very rarely do) it's easy to feel a little...deflated.
However, I was browsing through a photo gallery for the launch of the US Open and was very interested to see all the relaxed hair dos on the majority of the women who attended. Could this signal a departure from the whole package glamour look we expect to see even at the opening of something in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre? Might a wash 'n' go soon be enough?

Getting a blow dry is one of those treats in life that, like manicures, is becoming part of women's weekly routine and that's great! I'm never one to deny anyone a treat. Life's too short; I treat myself daily. I'm just glad that low-maintenance gals, or those of us who are short on spending money, can once again embrace our natural selves and flaunt our product-free, un-styled hair without feeling like the poor cousins at the party.
