The Claws are Out! We Give Nail Extensions a Try

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock it won’t have escaped your notice that there’s a new nail trend hitting our shores. It’s been rocked by celebs like Rhianna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce for quite a while now and the more fashion forward among us have also been sporting them.

But, as with all trends it’s now filtering down to the main stream and with that in mind I decided to try out nail extensions for myself.

I’ve been tempted by them for some time, but my fear of impracticality held me back. As a mum of one and someone with an electronic device practically glued to my hand 24/7, I had visions of me bumbling around like Edward Scissorhands, shredding all in my path.

I headed along to Glam Nails on Trinity St. in D2 as a paying punter rather than as a guest. First off I’ll say that I’ve found my new go to nail salon. The team could not have been friendlier and the added bonus of having a movie playing in front of the nail bar meant that the time flew by. The curved nature of the bar also meant that chat was encouraged between customers and staff and a few giggles were had.

Tatiana was my nail technician. A beautiful girl, with a professional and kind demeanour who had the precision, speed and accuracy of a nail ninja.

What threw me was the way she applied the nail extensions. I had been expecting tips, but instead she took out what looked like stickers and applied them to each finger. Then she cut the sticker to exactly match my own nail shape and size. Then layers of gel were built up over the sticker (or nail form as they are called) and once dry the form was removed leaving a clear hard nail.

While I opted for a long stiletto nail shape, which can’t be described as natural, the overall effect was much more natural than tips in my opinion. And it’s what I’ll opt for again irrespective of nail length or shape.

While initially taking some getting used to, I am in love with these nails. I would normally sport a natural nail, short, square shape in a block colour. And while I still think that that way is a classic, these cat-like talons make me feel instantly glamourous. I have received lots of notice and compliments on them from both men and women. And while typing is a little awkward it’s by no means impossible.

Will I keep them like this? No. I’m sure after a few weeks they’ll quickly become tiresome. Will I get them again? Absolutely! For when you feel like you need a change, or to inject some fun into your look, then yes I’d highly recommend them. I already have them earmarked for my summer holidays.
