Hi Rosemary,
I went shopping with all your advice and now have a capsule wardrobe! Got the jeggings, a jacket, the Skater dress (which I wouldn't have tried on in a million years..... It makes my waist tiny,!) two scarves, 2 pairs ballet flats and I'm chuffed. Honestly, I have no fashion sense so I have decided to follow your advice slavishly from now on. I have made so many purchases recently that do not tie in my clothes at all and leave me feeling like I had no clothes. Couldn't find t-shirts in warehouse. Any other suggestions for tee shirts? Please tell me how I can find your blog? Have searched the site with your first name and all I end up is with products that contain Rosemary!, thanks.....your biggest fan!

I don t think the sales this year were very good but I got a lovely pair of leather shorts in River Island reduced from 40euro to 18 and the best thing was that they were my size which is very rare to find when the sales are on.When buying shorts in the sales I m always tempted to buy a bigger size if I can t find mine but they actually look really awkward if they are larger than they are supposed to be so I was chuffed when I found those in my size and the same applies to jeans but it s cool with jumpers if you are going for the oversized look.I also bought a lovely top in Vero Moda for 20 euro reduced from 27,not much but totally worth it cause their stuff is really nice anyways.

Totally delighted with my sales savvy this year. Bought two dresses I had been eying up and fitted on before the sales, at 50% off. Likewise a pair of boots, and then some basic stuff like pjs and undies, not massively reduced but all needed. No mad purchases, I learnt that lesson the hard way.

Great post :) In previous years I've been guilty of buying that dress that's 1 size too small.. this year however I got about 10 minutes at the sales as I took my mam and her feet were hurting lol! I did manage to snap up a lovely skirt and a pair of shorts in A-wear and d'mammy bought me a (full price) pleather jacket in debenhams for my birfday that I absolutely love! There are one or two other things that I'd love to pick up, but alas I'm broke so I won't be getting them this week!

Have to agree with Rosemary here Laura. I too work in retail and although Christmas is a horrific time (I left the shop at 6 on Christmas Eve and was back in for 9 on stephen's day) at the end of the day it's our job. I can always tell the SAs who despise the sales as they treat customers badly. I actually said it to someone in BTs when I was picking up two Eyes to Kill that I needed help picking shades and she told me she was too busy and wrecked, there was no one else at her counter. After being treated this way myself by other retail workers I made the decision to continue to try my best to never unload my tiredness or even resentment about sales to a customer. They're still a customer and its your job, you also never know who could be a mystery shopper.

Great advice as usual. Was in Marks yesterday and Holy God they have arranged everything in item type and by size so you can find nothing.
Having just fininsed my Marian Keyes book I have quite an extensive 'Sovel List' and that sort of thing in a close second to the Hanger Basher who was lashing hangers across the rail and ramming them into one another to find a bargain. Sooo annoying. Had to remove myself from the situation. Got nothing in the end.

Laura, I actually disagree. I'm totally down with the fact that staff shouldn't have to take customers' ire about opening hours (as it's totally out of their hands), but saying you're not going to get things for customers and aren't as friendly as usual is, in my opinion, a bit of a cop-out!

If you work in retail, your job is to sell things to people, and the sales are one of the busiest (and ergo most important) times for any retailer. To be told by a staff member that they just can't do their job properly during those times isn't good enough at all for the job you're being paid to do.

I've worked in retail myself - in Brown Thomas, BT2, Urban Outfitters, Zara, Boots (and more, God I feel old!) - and I know how frustrating it can be when you have customers messing up a pile you've just tidied, or asking for a pair of jeans in a particular size when you're in the middle of something, but that's your JOB, and it's never more important than during sale time when each and every customer is twice as likely to buy something than usual. If you're not willing to put in the effort during that period, then I would maybe think twice about whether or not a life in retail is for you.
