This is not a good time of year for my skin. It’s naturally oily, but seasonal changes in temperature and the fluctuation caused by cold weather and heated buildings make it crazy. My face should not be a reflective surface.
I’m pretty attentive about altering my skincare to give it what it needs, but that doesn’t make me feel better about the fact that my makeup likes to creep slowly up, down, and side to side throughout the day. Who wants eyeshadow in their hair?
To tackle what I have rather disgustingly entitled ‘the winter creep’ I was determined to try something to keep my makeup in place. A good primer is the obvious solution.

- This offering from Nars does the job. Being a fussy customer, I don’t like a matte finish. I want some dewiness that won’t progress throughout the day into a face like a bag of chips.
- This primer is oil-free and does contain some oil absorbing properties to keep the creep at bay. However it doesn’t overpower the formulation of your makeup to give you a flat look.
- It also sits nicely in pores (without angering them) to give you a nice smooth base with plenty of grip.
- I’ve found one unexpected but pleasing bonus with this product – if I use a little under my eye area, it prevents my concealer from creasing. Since that’s one of the most annoying and common makeup problems, I consider it a great bonus!
This retails at €33 for 30 mls, which is certainly pricey. But most people don’t need to use primer every day or all year round. If it smothers the creep, I consider it a sound investment! Disgusting, but true.
