Smashbox gets a makeover in Arnotts – and Emma does, too!

Smashbox counter Arnotts

Being a beauty blogger is a funny old thing sometimes. I mean I love it and it’s great, it really is, but there is nothing like taking a million close-up photos of your own face to make you suddenly and acutely conscious of your every flaw. It’s fine for Aisling and Rosemary and my mum to encourage me to smile more in photos but as clearly evidenced here, it’s not so easy when the result is a slightly demented chipmunk with a boss eye and no upper lip. Trust me – it’s not that I think pouting is a great look, but at least it has some modicum of dignity. Just ask Posh Spice.

 Smashbox products

The products that were used on me – including lipstick in Fig, Love Me blush and Head Shot eyeshadow trio

All that said, there are some occasions when pulling poses just won’t do. And being surrounded by lovely friendly Smashbox people watching you get your photo taken just happens to be one of them. There was nothing for it but to smile, chipmunk cheeks and all. And the results are softened somewhat by the really very lovely makeup look that was created for me first. And yes, I really should have taken off my coat.

 Smashbox Photo Booth

All of this is in aid of the brand spanking new Smashbox counter in Arnotts, which is not only about a bajillion times bigger than the previous incarnation but also features a global first for the brand. A very swish – and permanent – photo booth is part of the new makeover which will allow you to try a product, get your photo taken and see what you think of the results before you part with your cash. And if you REALLY like what you see, you can also upload the pics to Facebook, share them on Twitter or email them to yourself for later use. Pretty nifty, eh?

 Smashbox Foundation

Unsurprisingly given the brand’s heritage – it was born out of Smashbox Studios in LA – the makeup photographs beautifully. My previous experience with Smashbox prodcucts is quite limited but I am really taken with what was used on me here – especially the hydrating primer, described as 8 glasses of water for the skin –  I can feel my parched, dehydrated face drinking it up. The Studio Skin foundation stayed put – not just all day, but through a night on the tiles, too. And the eyeshadow trio in Head Shot may look understated in the pan, but the purple undertones to the brown shadow brought out a golden tone to my brown eyes that I’ve never noticed before.

Are you a Smashbox fan? Have you checked out the new counter, or do you plan to, the next time you’re in town?

Emma, I had to laugh i am the exact same in photos, my eyes disappear in photos so i always look drunk/demented when i smile. For my graduation photos the photographer tried to make me say “sausage” so i’d give a big smile, eventually my mother stepped in let him know the score!

How much is the smashbok hydrating primer? it sounds exactly what i’m looking for.

  • Emma says:

I’m glad I’m not alone Ashling! I can’t remember the price of the primer offhand but the Photo Finish one is €31.50 so it is probably similar. Photo Finish primer reviewed here:

EMMA SMILES!! Hurrah – you look great!

  • Corrie says:

Emma I feel you pain – I dread my wedding photos, God knows what I’ll look like!

You look lovely though! Loving the sound of that primer too

  • Cait says:

I know what you mean about chipmunk cheeks – I have the exact same. I had to develop a “photo smile” to try to stop my lips from disappearing and my cheeks taking over my whole face.

Girls, I got frog mouth. Really. Too wide and thin lips. When I smile, it turns into a slit. So I take a leaf out of Katie Holmes’s book and do a half Mona Lisa. Works a treat!

  • Atkin says:

@Corrie I was the same for my wedding pictures. If I were to disappear tomorrow, I have no idea what they would use for my missing appeal; there are no photos of me! I really regret being camera shy now as I am due our first baby in July and have no pictures of me to show the kid as he/she grows up. Anyway, speak to your photographer beforehand, they will help you find a pose that will flatter you and that you are happy with.

As for Smashbox, I LOVE it! I am nothing without the Halo powder.

  • Fiona says:

Big thumbs-up to Smashbox here! Their shadows have tremendous payoff, though they can be a wee bit loose. Love their blushers too, lovely texture to them.

  • Emma says:

Good to see so much love for Smashbox! What products should I be checking out next, so?

  • Aine says:

My eyes close when I smile so the result is looking like I’m absolutely demented drunk even during the day or with zero booze in my system. A curse I tell you!

  • Cait says:

I forgot to say when I said that I know what you mean by chipmunck cheeks – I don’t think you have them in those photos at all. You look great!

  • Emma says:

Ah Cait you’re very sweet but I know the truth! Feeling much less lonely now I know so many of us have issues with our photo smiles!!

  • Mo says:

Hi Emma, I absolutely suffer from the same “demented crazy monkey” look when I smile. But, and I’m being completely honest here, I much prefer the photos where you’re smiling! You look like you’re all personality, which is stunning, while the other photos are grand, but could be anybody! So keep smiling, its much much prettier!!

  • Siri says:

I can’t do self portraits! Even if I smile I look mad, the smile seems strained, and my eyes get all crazy.

Got to say, though, you should smile more often, Emma. You look absolutely gorgeous in those photos :)

  • Beth TV says:

Am a massive Smashbox fan; have to say that they really do make excellent products all round. The Photo Set powder is amazing, the foundations sit longer than the Pyramids.O Gloss is arguably the best lip product going and as for the primers, well they can do very little wrong. Love their eye shadows as well, easy to work with and great pigmentation :)

  • Mazerooni says:

When I smile part of my lip disappears and one of my teeth slips into it’place….soooooo annoying! Very conscious of it now!! Toothy is my new name!

  • Jenny says:

You look wonderful dahling ;o) would love to get my hands on that make up-ah the colours! The packaging! Your skin looks amazing!

  • Jenny says:

Ps I’ve an average nose but in pics it goes all convex and I end up like a feckin crow/SJP ;o(

  • Elle says:

People always say ‘smile’ and I say no sorry I can either smile and have my eyes closed or pout and have them open – it truely is a curse :( It’s funny so many people seem to have the same problem – I am a photographers nightmare

  • StellarLas says:

Never really paid much attention to smashbox before but the praise has got me intrigued now.
Never seen you look better Emma, honestly, smiling suits you.
