Boffins discover that wearing a bra is bad for you and could cause boobs to wither and degrade. AIEEEEE

Eat five fruit and veg a day.  Oh don't bother, that was made up.  Drink 8 glasses of water a day.  Oh no need.  That was made up too.

And now another cherished maxim that we all lived by might be made up too.  There is actually no need for us to be wearing bras.  And in fact they might actually be doing us harm.

Aged ELEVEN I was marched unceremoniously into Shaws Almost Nationwide (we were on holidays in the sunny south east) to buy my first bra.

This was no "training bra".  No double A cup for me.  No I was a full on 32B.  I was morto.  I was one of those kids who developed about five years before everyone else -  me and my best friend were the only ones in primary school who needed to be trussed up.  On the plus side we always did get lots of attention from boys.  On the minus side I think my boobs are the same size now as they were then.

So I've now been wearing a bra for about a hundred years and honestly would never dream of getting dressed and facing the day without one - since age 11.

I always thought that bras were good, supportive for your back and stopped your boobs from sagging early.  At least that's what we were all led to believe.

But now SCIENCE has put a stop to that little idea.  A French study has provoked widespread hilarity, upset and debate after boffins surveyed 330 women and discovered that  wearing a bra means “supporting tissues will not grow and even they will wither and the breast will gradually degrade,”

You what?!  And furthermore "medically, physiologically and anatomically, breasts gained no benefit from having their weight supported".

So basically we've been fed a lot of horse manure by lingerie manufacturers?  Surely not?

How old were you when you first started wearing a bra?  And do you ever go braless?  Share in the comments!
