Lysol in your fanny, eh? I have some for cleaning the toilet ... I suppose I'll just toddle off before my boyfriend becomes offended.

I think there is a certain cultural aspect to a lot of those ads. Americans were historically a lot more prude than Europe, even England. Those quakers and things. Silly people. Also historically, women's body mechanics were wildly misunderstood and viewed as unclean. We know NOW that they're as necessary as breathing, but then they were still carrying around the psychoanalytical thing of wombs creating all sorts of problems in society. That's where the word 'hysterical' comes from. It's some Latin word meaning 'wandering womb'. Women on their periods weren't allowed into churches. How they knew, I have no idea, but there you go.

As for the smell ... well it's stupid really. But if you weren't inclined to be as hygienic with your underwear (like some of the kids I work with :shudder: ) I can see their point. Remember that Always ad where they had a pad on a rodeo thingy? Well, that's not a normal situation either. Maybe the ad companies decided an extreme example was the way to go?

Ok I'll be devils advocate here a while: these ads date from a time when people didn't have showers and probably only bathed once a week. Max
Sex was unprotected as condoms didn't exist or were rare.
Fact is that stale sperm left in the vagina DOES SMELL.
Needs must
Btw I disagree with panty liners . Yes I have discharge too - I am a woman I'm supposed to. I wear cotton knickers so it's absorbed. They stain. Big wow. Im not going to be made feel that i need an absorbent pad like a baby or an incontinent beacuse I'm not "fresh" according to the marketers

Sinead, There are many women who use re-usable sanitary towels nowadays, myself included. They are way, way more comfortable than any disposable towel and kinder to the environment. They are cheaper too of course as you use them over and over again. BUT, they are NOT 'foul' as you state. You change them regularly and wash them thoroughly in the machine same as anything else - but on their own of course. I know if you've never tried it it's hard to imagine anything to recommend them, but I dare you to try them. Here's a link to a site that sells them.
www.earthwisegirls.co.uk

It's the same with reusable nappies for babies. If you've never done it, it seems repulsive, but it's actually fine.

I don't think anyone can get close enough to tell whether I have 'preserved my daintiness' through scent alone at that time; the spotty cow inhaling chocolate and painkillers whilst crying at Andrex adverts is a bit of a giveaway.

I think the Kotex ads were trying to encourage women to switch to disposable towels. Prior to that, women used fabric ones that were rinsed out and used again and again! Imagine how foul those must have been! Shudder! Hilarious post! :-)

@Lisa: I know the one! My mum raised her eyebrows when she saw it and said 'Why doesn't she just put on a new pair of knickers? Dirty mare!'

Also read an article on Jezebel about the Lysol douching, did untold amounts of damage down there apparently. Heaven forbid we ladies all lose our daintiness eh? (Also since this is kind of on topic: can't remember who from here suggest I switch from Always to Boots own brand sanitary towels but best advice I've had in months. Thanks so much!)

I have to say, unnecessary as i deem most irrelevant things aimed at "preserving daintiness" i am partial to scented pantyliners. I only ever wear liners during my period, and i know it doesn't smell, but i just like them
