Who's a good boy? Fictional pets that I want now!

A few weeks ago, I watched and really rather enjoyed Disney's sci-fi, Mars-based romp John Carter (which didn't deserve anything like slating it got, in my opinion). One of the things I particularly liked in it was Woola, John's bizarrely cute giant alien monster dog. "I want one of those!" thought I.

You're a good boy, Woola!

Which then got me thinking of all the other brilliant - but sadly fictional - pets that I want. So here are my favourites.

Gizmo from Gremlins

Lads. I think it's physically impossible not to love Gizmo the mogwai. He's got great big eyes. He's fluffy. He's got floppy ears. In short, he's face-meltingly cute. Of course, there is the fact that getting him wet or feeding him after midnight will result in all hell breaking loose in the form of scary reptilian Gremlins, but he's just so lovely I think I'd be willing to take that risk.

Picasso from The Fifth Element

Look at his sad little elephant-y face! I have no idea what Picasso is, but the first time I saw The Fifth Element and this little multi-coloured dude on the evil Zorg's desk I squealed "What is that?! I LOVE HIM!".

Falkor from The Neverending Story

Falkor was a luck dragon, which essentially meant that he was a giant cuddly flying dog who had incredibly good luck. Imagine how much better your life would be if you could abandon your car and public transport and just travel everywhere by luck dragon, soaring above the losers caught in traffic on your way to work? It would be AMAZING.

Crookshanks from the Harry Potter series

Hermione's cat Crookshanks was a fantastic addition to the cast of Harry Potter. He's meant to be part-Kneazle (a magical feline creature with the ability to detect suspicious people), which makes him even more intelligent than your average cat. Plus he's got the most magnificent grouchy, smushed-in face.

Zingy from the EDF Energy ads

My initial reaction to Zingy was much like the first time I saw Picasso the elephant thing. It was a mixture of thinking how insanely adorable it was while also wondering exactly WHAT the hell it was. It turns out that he's a flame! Of course! He's not a confusingly cute turd after all! And when he dances along to Electric Dreams or the theme from Hawaii 5-0 in those ads, I damn near burst with happiness and general squee-ing.
