I was nearly five starting school too and I did NOT want to go. I have vague memories of going to playgroup the year before which was fine as I knew it was only while mam was doing the shopping and I'd get Smarties afterwards! But I was having a ball at home with my mammy, baking and doing exercises (I remember doing a Jane Fonda workout every day for ages, I thought it was a game of course, it wasn't meant to be a workout for me!!) and having elevenses of Bovril and crackers & cheese with my dad every day so no bloody way was I giving that up without a fuss! I think my mother managed to leave me for about half an hour, the rest of the time she had to sit with me coz I was holding on to her blue rain mac so tight she couldn't leave! Hated school, most of it anyway and couldn't WAIT to get the hell out and go to Uni.

I loved school and 1974 was a great year to start school it seems. I wore a bright pink dress with a white bow on my hair and had a tartan school bag. Thought the other kids crying and making a dash for the door were mental.
My mother is always late, so true to form I was left for 20 mins on my own with the teacher waiting for her to show up. I was having a ball helping to tidy up and was not impressed when my Mam eventually made an appearance .

I don't remember my actual first day at school but I remember going in for a visit at the beginning of June on my 4th birthday to see the school. This was 1994. Holy cow that's a long time ago!! My mam asked me did I want to see my school school as we left her parents house so off we went. When I got there (2 room building with a prefab next door) all 80-something kids were doing music/singing class and they sang happy birthday to me! The teacher gave me 4 jelly babies from the box in her desk, 1 for each year. I got to play on the computer as well, a little game where I had to guide the teddy bear through the maze with the arrows on the keyboard to the picnic basket at the end, I thought this was the last word altogether! Got to see where I'd be sitting as well. Well impressed with the place so I was!! Pity the last couple of years there and into secondary school turned out the way they did, despised every waking moment of it but college definitely made up for it!! :)

We used to get free hot cocoa (before health and safety went crazy obviously) and on my first day they split it over my arm and scalded me! The principal had to take me home on my first day.

It didn't put me off though, I loved school.

Oh god I'm a teacher myself and have junior infants this year. First day is hard on so many of them while others toddle in without a care in the world.

I remember my own day vividly. I wore a green and white striped dress and had a zig and zag school bag. I hid my beloved teddy inside in case anything happened him at home. Hated my teacher though. She was a weapon.

Isnt so much a first day story as a third day story. At the end of the first day, playing and what not in one big group, we were split into two junior infant classes. Ended up in the class with the more harsh, shrill-voiced teacher. On the third day, me and another girl snuck out of her class and made a break for the class with the nicer teacher. And we got away with it for a few hours before it was noticed. Great Escape eat your heart out.....they let us stay in the second class in the end! :)

Was in 1974 in a tiny school in Sligo. Not a bother on me. I told the teacher I wasn't a baby and shouldn't be in the babies class so I was promoted to High Babies and stayed there. I counld'nt understand why anyone was crying . I cried weeks later as the teacher used to give those lovely Noddy crayons to crybabies. Fun times .

I honestly don't remember my first day in either primary or secondary school - I hated school with a passion, perhaps I've wiped it from my mind!
College now... that was an entirely different story

It was 1974 and I remember being surprised at seeing all the people from mass as there was't any preschool and most mothers didn't work once they had a child.

We didn't have uniforms, the boys and girls were separated during break times.

A lot of us walked to and from school (about a mile or two) and we ate blacberries on the way home. Except the first day. It was a treat to get driven to or from school.
