Woahza, about to sit my final exam (CIDESCO) for beauty and body treatments. I am reading these stories with horror! I'm only (nearly) qualified and I'm horrified! I'm lucky I guess that I go to a great training college but I think that the stupid comments "Jez, how long have you left between waxes!" are definitely more to do with the individual therapist not having any cop on than anything on the curriculum. Trust me, the curriculum regarding clients is all about making them feel at ease and always being polite and never being nosy. Saying that if someone's nature is rude it's extremely difficult for the tutors to reel them in. My fellow students have made some horrible comments to me and I know in their minds they meant well but I said that if they said that to a client they'd be murdered.
I actually feel better for my last impending exam after reading these comments! I might have exam butterflies but I know when I'm out in the real world working that I'm already on the right track.
Ladies if a client is rude to you or doesn't perform a treatment right - complain! There's a lot of dedicated professionals in this industry but also (clearly from the above comments) a bunch of clueless ones. The only way to get better service in future is to make your point to management. Otherwise nothing will change.

oh girls :( im a wee bit mortified for the industry i work in reading these stories! i can honestly say that not every beauty therapist is like the above mentioned and i agree with songe for starters (third or fourth comment). I personally take great pride in what i do and adore my clients and consider them friends at this stage. All i can say is advice can be given and tactfully, and i presume thats what most clients want but bad manners seems to be the real issue in most of the stories i have read. As waxing is my main treatment now, i can tell you, we're all the same yet completely different and some clients are easier than others but thats all part of it! If you cant have a bit of fun, relaxation or a good oul' rant with your therapist....i really suggest you find a new one! when you find one you like, you will stick with them and follow them whereever thay go

It's not just what they say, it's the lack of thought or pride in what the job is that gets me. I had a couple of terrible experiences that I have since learnt from. Long time ago I went to get my brows/lashes dyed. The therapist left me to get ready. She came back about 10 minutes later with no apology for leaving me so long, she started the process and hadn't washed her hands. She had clearly just had a cigarette and the smell and sensation against my face was horrible. I didn't say anything as I was a chicken! Another time at a different salon that is no longer in business I went to have the same brow/lash dye treatment. It was my 1st time at the salon so I was very specific with the therapist about the colour being a 'can't even see your brows they're so blond' type! Well she dyed the brows black. I was in shock and asked her was there anything she could do and she was quite surely with me but I think she could see I was quite upset and told me to lie back down and then put what I think was peroxide on them and burnt my skin. I was upset and told her to just leave the brows and I left. I went to pay (idiot) and the manager/owner said 'o you had a wax as well' as if to charge me. I said no I didn't, said my skin was burnt and just left. I was in such shock I cried on the street. I went home and cut a fringe! I learnt to be very clear about instructing what I want and luckily have never had as bad an experience since. It irks me now that I didn't say anything or complain at the time. I wouldn't be so intimidated now.

I went away for the weekend to a very well known hotel in Cavan - it was the middle of winter so I'd let my waxing go a bit but decided I'd get a bikini wax for the pool etc. Well first she said to me "Oh, very hairy aren't you...how long has it been since you got waxed?" I was like it's only been a few months. She went on to butcher me, pulled the strips off slowly and then went back to pull it so fast she actually took off skin, I was black & blue and bleeding!

Told her to get away from me, as I was actually crying in pain! I made a complaint to the management, had to show 2 random management women my dodgy wax before they'd agree that she was "fully trained" but they were sorry! Have never been brave enough to get a wax since, literally took me weeks to heal!

I've had a few horrendous beauty treatments over the years, from the patchy fake tan that looked like a 4 year old applied instead of a professional to a beetroot red face after one facial years ago. Also, nothing worse than going to get your legs waxed only to have to shave them at home due to all the missed bit.

I've found a salon that I have stuck with for years since I moved West and they are the most professional bunch of girls ever. No invasive chit chat and their waxing is so good in technique and therefore nearly painless, i actually fell asleep having my legs waxed. A facial there is my idea of bliss, Clairns Spa experience in Ennis (no, I have no affiliation, just a customer)
Heres a salute to all beauticians who are excellent at their work.

These stories are great - I always feel so ugly when a beauty therapist/hairdresser says something mean as you're literally on a lower level and fairly vulnerable. I think the main thing is when the service is not good do not go back! For all of the wax stories: ladies go to Waxperts - I actually look forward to it!! You feel like a VIP and it's painfree :)

I'm a therapist and I would NEVER say anything about being cleaner down there after a wax!! Sugarplum I don't mind the clients making small talk with me at all love a good chat but I do agree with the running late and then your running behind all day for the rest of your clients!especially when you get no apology or phone call to say they will be late and swan in the door late and still expect to be taken! Have had few bad hair experiences In my time and didn't get my hair cut for 5 years after my long hair was butchered into a bob when I went for a "trim" !back to normal now thank god!! It's not just shit therapists /hairdressers say we could allI rant about restaurants and hotels and shops etc so let's not start to feel bad! And never call it a RONNIE!! We don't anyway over here in the west!!!!!

I used to get embarrassed when the hairdresser would say- 'Did you try to trim your fringe yourself?' now I just laugh. Sugar plum, I run a business working with the public and all in all have been working with the public for almost twenty years. I have never thought a client asking you if you liked your job was annoying. In fact I think its nice when the person who is paying your wages makes the effort to be friendly.
