Hang on, before we all panic: last I heard, most squalene is made from olive oil anyway?

Not just in the EU, as you're reporting from the original French report. And by the way, take a closer look at the organization involved and some of its vested interests and politics. Just saying. A bit like taking a closer look at the American EWG...

It's also the case for cosmetics and skincare sold on the North through South American, Middle Eastern, and Indian markets. Simple reason: squalene derived from olive oil is cheaper. (Ethics is, I'm afraid, as ever just a happy coincidence. Saying this as a cynical vegetarian.)

Though yes, for sure, the main difference is East Asian markets. But brands from there (ex. Shiseido) produce different ranges for other markets (ex. in Europe), so it's best to check individual products and labels, and if in doubt (ex. if it says "squalene" in the ingredient-list but doesn't specify the source-material), email the manufacturers. Rather than blanket-boycotting.

Also a good idea to email companies anyway, as PR and CS people and eventually policy higher up *can* be influenced by consumers saying "we'd rather not use certain things, and we'd like you not to use them either... that is, if you want our money and good-will and good word of mouth."

Ok I THINK - but hopefully someone who knows will come on and correct me if I'm wrong - that the chemical name is Hexamethyltetracosa
And theres lots of variants of the name but basically anything ending in squalene - like say Perhydrosqualen, Perhydrosqualene is squalene

Bit late in the day to be responding lol but I always thought squalane was vegetable derived and squalene was from sharks liver. I think one is more pore clogging than the other as far as I know.

I know when the A'kin brand used to be on QVC they always specifically said that they used olive squalene so that's definitely one to look out for. This article was horrible to read but I'm glad I did, I'll be checking everything I buy more carefully. I'm a strict veggie and an animal lover.

Wow this is fairly shocking! I had never heard about this before. I'm not a veggie (used to be) but love animals and I believe at the very least if you are going to kill something for human consumption find use for the whole animal or don't kill it. However this over fishing is terrible- shark numbers are already being depleted for the demand of shark fin soup which is a delicacy in some asian countries. Poor jaws :(

@Freckles - 'natural' cosmetics would be able to contain shark derived squalene, because it hasn't been synthesised in a lab (Lush aside, who do have campaigns against this type of thing).

It's a pity that squalene CAN'T be synthesised in large quantities cheaply.
