I think it’s a very tricky question…my sister (who is a wonderful person and a 6ft, size 8 beauty) bitchly referee to something called a “plain girl complex”. I can remember many times my intelligence had been called into question by academic ladies because I didn’t go to college and work as a make up artist. It’s painful to have your intellect and feminist principles called into question simply because you chose an ascetic career. Ok, in fairness, Bricks article made me squirm. Mainly as she gives females a bad reputation by cultivating the cat fight culture.

I don’t think I’ve ever said this about the DM before, but they’ve actually bought up a very complicated social issue. I think that means the world is ending, right?…

I don’t think she ugly or anything but I wouldn’t class her as stunning. I’ve had a few friends who were really stunning but never hated them for it. Yes I was a bit jealous that they got a lot more attention then me but I saw why & diet blame them for it coz I would have done the same!

I feel sorry for her in a way as it sounds like she’s slushing away potential friends by thinking their husbands/friends will fancy her etc. she’s not helping herself.

But generally I think what really irks me about her, is because she isn’t beautiful to me, in fact I think she’s rather plain. Plus she’s wrong…if I see a beautiful girl or friend, I try to absorb this beauty through osmosis by touching them..their makeup..their hair. I think that the problem here is that other women don’t like her because she’s vain.

Basically she’s projecting her own insecurities onto others.

Sevda, I know exactly what you mean. Some very beautiful girls – I mean the kind who everyone staaaares at as they are so gorgeous when seen in real life next to normal people – get a lot, a LOT of jealousy and bitchiness. My sister’s just normal-pretty now, but when she was 18 or 19 I remember going to parties with her and watching other girls’ faces just change. They were very bitchy to her. And at halloween when she cut up a furry coat and went as a cavewoman I overheard a guy call her a ‘slut’ to his friends – because she looked incredibly, breathtakingly beautiful. (My sis is a lovely person, btw.) So, well, I see both sides.

I dress nicely, do my hair/makeup and work in a place that people are very dressed down, and get some bitchy comments as a result from some people. I think the “No way. Women just hate women with bad personalities” response is a bit convenient, as everybody has bitchy impulses – saying it’s because the target has a bad personality justifies it too easily.
