Rosamaria I agree with your appraisal of the How to be a Woman book. I had heard a lot about it before reading it. It did take me back to my childhood though, am also her age bracket or just slightly older. Was a book I found I had to read in stages, all a but much in one go.

Will put the new book on the Christmas wish list, it should be entertaining.

I loved how accessible she made feminism to the masses, an easy un-literary sort of feminism that spurned thoughtfulness. I think she’s excellent.

I read the first book. At the risk of being stoned, I was completely underwhelmed. Fair play to her and this is a reflection on my taste. I thought it was bargain basement simplistic ramblings.
And now I go to put on armour.

It irritates and bores me that any few-and-far-between programme/film by women and for women is instantly hopped on as unrepresentative of all races. I have never heard the likes of “Entourage” or “The Sopranos” etc. being held up to scrutiny for their Caucasian primary characters.

This constant nonsense over “Girls” is just an excuse for misogyny, same rubbish as there was over SATC. Unless journalists are interrogated as to why they don’t use interviews with actors/directors to question the disturbing misogyny of the Bond franchise or any other film/TV show which degrades/ignores women, I don’t see why women should be expected to castigate other women for not addressing issues that they have no experience of. What do they want? Token characters?

Caitlin Moran is dead right. I liked Bim Adewunmi’s article as well. Nothing I’m not already aware of but it might be enlightening for others.

From a slightly older (ahem) feminist point of view, I was slightly underwhelmed by How to be a Woman – thought it did’t go far enough. But could see she was a very funny writer. May get this one after all.

I have to say I LOVED her first book. I’ve given it to all my friends, even the men, it’s just brilliant.
However, this one I’m not so sure about.. I can’t read it all in one sitting and it’s not as funny.. but each to their own I guess!

LOVE her. Was also mildly jealous of her but in complete awe when she was in Naked City and only a couple of years older than me. The fact that she was also a goth made me love her more.
Loved How to Be A Woman and have bought Moranthology. Have to admit the abortion chapter disturbed me a little but thats cos Id just had a baby and was hormonal. I think her honesty is hugely refreshing and I wouldnt condemn her at all about those recent tweets.

Kitty, I thought she was great at the reading, but yes, the shoutiness in print can be a little bit wearing.

And Sugar, excellent point! I thought Bim Adewunmi’s piece was really great and I hope it made readers think a bit more about the issue.

Can’t wait to read this, loved How to be a woman! I like Lena Dunham too and that article you linked was very insightful, intersectionality should also be addressed but at least having a discussion about it helps develop better shows and writing in the future!

Meant to say I only disliked her becuase I was jealous! Especially as I’m a bit older. But I’m glad she’s saying what she’s saying, even though I don’t subscribe to it all.
