Karl Lagerfeld calls Adele fat! Should she go on the KL diet?

The bleedin state of that

Splutter out tea time!  Karl Lagerfeld remarked the other day that he thinks beautiful Adele is “a little fat.”

The bloody nerve of him.  He’s always at this, calling people fat – and er in fact he was carrying around a little too much in the love handle department himself earlier in the century.  So he invented his own diet and lost 90 pounds.

The diet is completely nutritionally unsound and “unlike most modern approaches to dieting Lagerfeld views hunger and deprivation as a part of weight loss and Lagerfeld even goes so far as to state that dieting has to be a form of punishment”

So, a valuable insight into Karl’s psyche then.  Read more about the diet here.

Karl pre-diet

Ah the always classy Karl from the House of Chanel.  Maybe Adele should go on his diet eh?  Or NOT.

Reactions please!

…correct me if i’m wrong, but wasn’t his diet effectively ”anorexia and diet coke”??

  • Aisling says:

Emma – yes and if you wanted to change your body shape etc plastic surgery was the only way to do it!

  • Stephcie says:

I think he’s a disgrace to the legacy of Chanel – if I was Coco I’d be turning in my grave. There have been some serious bad vibes going around about all things Chanel recently from complaints re their in house staff and policies to disappointment with their ranges and repetitive (make-up) collections. Which is a shame for such an iconic brand. What a gobs**te!

  • EmmaCat says:

bleedin cheek! sure she’s fab as she is :D

  • stace-invader says:

ugh watched midday on tv3 today & that woman (you know the odious twit with the long stringy straw like hair) was agreeing with him she just yesterdsay spoke about women who dont breast feed being essentially bad mothers along with a lot of other nonsense in her time!!

the simple fact is ‘fat’ is a comment on aestetics & ‘over weight’ refers to health issues owing to weight!!

i think the question is what exactly has KL got going on in his life that the size of Adele’s a***..???

  • ~Thalia~ says:

I’m going to go out on a limb here and disagree with the fuss all this has caused in the meeeja. She IS fat, he’s right. I’m not sure why this has caused so much consternation amongst her fans.
I’m fat, no sugar coating. I’m not sure what his motivation was in saying this in public but I honestly dont get the revulsion at calling a spade a spade. Maybe I’m ridiculously thick skinned wen it comes to personal comments though :)

Am sure I’ve heard this morning on the 6 o’clock news on RTE1 (radio), but it did not quite register with me then.

Ah Karl…. I love the clothes he makes, but the man… If I remember well, he said a few months ago that women complaining about models being too thin in magazines were ‘fatties’ stuffing themselves with crisps on their sofa or something to that effect. So what else can you expect of someone like him.

And anyway, she’s a singer, not a model. So we shouldn’t have an opinion on what she looks like, rather on whether she is a good singer or not.

Did she offend him to get such a nasty comment?

  • Naomi says:

She is fat though. Obviously calling people things like that in the media isn’t right but neither is calling people thin. She’s not a healthy role model so there’s no point in defending her really.

Also Karl Lagerfeld calls everyone fat, it’s not that surprising.

  • Lisa says:

I think we need to stop holding “Uncle Karl” up as a spokesperson on things. He seems like a vile person and, I know fashion folk will probably disagree here, but he is completely unoriginal and undeserving of his high standing. I’d go so far as to say he’s vampiric in how he steals anything he thinks is cool and slaps it on the Chanel runway e.g. Amy Winehouse inspired models.

And, goes without saying, I think Adele is looking great.

  • Lornieloo says:

Omg..i clicked on the link for the diet there and the comments after are just mad!people actually want to do his diet and think it sounds good…mentalists!

  • Grace London says:

I don’t know if my eyes are set to a different scale or something but….Adele’s not fat. You wouldn’t walk past her in the street and think ‘That lass could do with being a little less fond of the lard.’ (NOTE Karl: I said think, NOT say).

She’s just not really thin. To me she looks kind of medium. Am I missing something?

Anyway, rude, Karl. Nothing to do with him, but he’s been going odd for some time. He says this stuff to get in the papers.

  • Arlene says:

She’s a little bit fat, he’s a little bit crypty. The difference is people don’t mention his crypty corpse when they are talking about his clothes, so WHY would anyone need to talk about anything other than Adele’s magnificent voice when they are talking about her. She’s not a model is she? No, she’s a beautiful singer, end of. Somebody roll old Crypty-Karl back to the sarcophagus until he learns some manners.

  • Aisling says:

Grace, Arlene – YES! It is time for him to be wheeled away now

  • It’s kind of fairly typical Karl to come out with something like that – didn’t engage brain before operating mouth. Even if he thinks she *is* fat, there is no need to say it. She’s a curvy girl but if there is one thing every single man in the world, KL or not, needs to shut his gob on it is women’s weight.

Q: Does my bum look big in this? A: No.
Q: Do you think I have put on some weight? A: No.
Q: Do my jeans look a bit tight? A: No.

    And so on… simples.

  • I don’t like Karl. He reminds me a bit of a Snooty-snobby Wicked step mother. Who do I think are the ugly step sisters? Tom Ford for one, not sure who will fit the bill for ugly sister #2….

  • Katie Healy says:

sad fact is the line of work he’s in, he doesn’t appreciate us larger ladies nor would he ever dream of catering for us. his creations would be sullied if a heffer like me squeezed in to them.
He is image obsessed and sadly the line of work Adele is in also is equally as image obsessed, he’s only said what others are thinking.
Not that I agree with his comments but all the magazines going in about how super she is for not caring about her size, are the very outlets publishing batshit crazy diets.
I don’t think Karl said anything terribly offensive though, sure she’s always going on anout how happy she is with her size and doesn’t mind being fat, water off a ducks back im sure.

  • Aisling says:

It’s true that Chanel has gone batshit crazy on a lot of levels not just Karl – read BBBs post on some of their carry on (which I can personally attest to also)

  • Fiona says:

Have you seen the *carp* (having to invent new swear words to fool my two-year-old – *fork* is my favourite) King Karl served up in his new collection for net-a-porter, and BT2 soon? It looks like a bunch of tat, and is meant to reflect the real Karl! Says it all, and makes you wonder how big the design team is at Chanel…. He is a weirdo control-freak, his ‘pronouncements’ on everything should be ignored!

  • Lisa says:

@ Grace, exactly! Her weight is beside the point. Like if someone asked me about Adele, I can honestly say her figure wouldn’t come into it.

  • fififinx says:

While what he is saying is reprehensible, he’s just repeating a mantra that BEGAN with Chanel. Coco didn’t have tits, she didn’t have hips and at the time clothes were actually designed for normally proportioned women who had both – so she changed the style and pioneered the attitude that culminated in “You can never be too rich or too thin” (Wallis Simpson – another one for whom I have no time). She also gave the world the sun tan – ‘cos she had sallow skin which couldn’t achieve the previously desirable Oirish Cailin look.
I think it’s time I trotted out something I have been thinking for a while – I don’t think haute couture has been designed for real women since Chanel. Largely it is designed by men, and is designed for someone who is straight up and down from shoulder to hip. Which would be either a fella or a woman who hasn’t had her period in a verra long time. I’m not saying that male clothing designers are anti-woman as such, merely that they are using as an exemplar the same as their predecessors and not having a great deal of experience seeing a ‘normal’ woman in her undies, they don’t realise that the standard bears no resemblance to the actual physiology of the majority of women.
And yet an awful lot of women with more dollars than sense persist in buying the clothing at vastly inflated prices while existing on a lettuce leaf and pills to fit them.
Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose…
