KK – I got caught in the x factor sit in once. I called to my friend on a lovely summers evening and they were all sitting on the bloody sofa eating pop corn. It doesn’t help that I don’t like x factor or pop corn.

After a recent heartbreak I was confiding in a friend who was 8 months pregnant and, get this, she looked at me with a smirk on her face, pointed to her bump and said “count yourself lucky. I mean look what they do to you”. At that moment I wanted to throttle her, after I’d dunked her smug little head down the toilet first. heh heh. Ah I wouldn’t, and I know she didn’t mean any harm. But phrases like “your the lucky one” just aren’t helpful. The other side of the coin is I have another friend whose my age and has a two year old. She seriously envies me my freedom and is very genuine when she tells me that I’m so lucky. When I see how tied she is in her 40′s with a demanding toddler, I actually DO feel lucky. So it goes both ways girls. I’ve really started to relish my freedom lately. My sis has 3 kids and is always saying things like “ah its well for you” when I’m flying off out to meet the girls for drinks. Was over in her house one Saturday evening dropping something off and they were settling down with the kids to watch X Factor. The bowls of popcorn and icecream were being laid out and the sis invited me to stay. Lovely as it was, I thought out I’d never get and over to the girls where the Prosecco was on ice. I think we get the life thats suited to us in the end

Slightly off topic (a little) but why is it exactly that as soon as a friend/family member gets engaged or married, they conveniently forget what it was like to be very newly in a relationship? Constantly being asked (in front of new boy) when we are getting engaged is not only embarrassing but is definitely going to scare him off big time! Hello? Did I ask you these things when you were in my place? No.
My nana asked me the other day if I would please get married before she dies! She’s almost 90. If thats not pressure…………..!

I too get the patronising ‘Well for you, isn’t it?’ comment from friends with children. Like you, I’ve taken to saying, ‘Well yes actually it is’. They chose to have children after all, and don’t hesitate to lecture me on the supposed joys of parenthood when it suits. So if being a mother is so great, surely trivial things like shopping for clothes and staying out late shouldn’t be so important to them?

Can you believe I just got asked by the groom’s mother did I have a boyfriend? Talk about timing! When I said nope do you know what she said? Why not??? I listed out all the reasons above and she STILL said but wouldn’t you not want to get married and have kids? NO!! Felt like smacking my head on the table!! Both her children have waited until 29 to get married and 30s to have kids. I honest to god don’t know what peoples hurry is to marry off all us poor lonely auld spinsters! Shur you couldn’t possibly be happy without a ring on your finger and up to your eyeballs in nappies!

My own mother asked me (at 23ish) if I was gay coz I hadn’t brought home a string of boys like my somewhat sluttier sisters!! I was happy as Larry being at uni, spending time with friends and spending HOURS practicing piano (studied music) but all that was by the by coz i didn’t have a man! The RELIEF when I got married was palpable…I was 27!! And the icing on the cake was that I married an accountant, someone sensible to keep me in check apparently (if only they knew…).

My niece gets pressure to get married coz she’s been with her boyfriend for four year but she’s only 24 so I make sure to tell her that she has plenty of time and not to be bullied into anything before she’s ready.

I’m 22, more or less single for over 4 years, all the freedom in the world & work on a cruise ship yet every time I ring home, skype or come home to Ireland I get the any sign of a fella yet?! My mam was married at 23 & she drilled into me to live my life & do all the things she didn’t, even more so after they split up. I have the most amazing friends and family who will ALWAYS be there for me, I like doing what I want when I want, having the bed to myself, not listening to snoring & most of all my job! I’m so lucky to have such a fantastic job but not exactly conductive to a relationship. But no, that doesn’t seem to be enough. I’m still made to feel like an old past-it spinster who knocks out peoples even numbers. I can’t believe the comments you’ve all gotten, it’s disgusting! My friends are all coupled/living together/kids & one couple is marrying in 2 days so it doesn’t help my defense.

I’m 41 and single. I don’t get comments anymore but the one that use to annoy me the most was from one girl who use to say ‘well isn’t it well for some’.

This was if I was out for a night/bought a new coat/shoes. She had 5 kids so I suppose money was tight.

In the end I use to say to her…yea it is.

Oh I was once called a ‘confirmed spinster’ by a women I had just met.

Loco – thats a miserable thing to say to you, take no notice. Like all the comments about fertility/weight/relationship status etc – its your business.

I was discussing the amaazing Katie Taylor with two of my neighbors the other day. Admittedly they are both over 70, but they kept talking about how she should retire and get married and ‘live her life’. As if achieving your hearts desire, winning olympic gold and cheering up the whole country wasnt enough – she needs a husband!! Grrrr
