I looked forward when I got my own gaff to luxurious and naughty abuse of the immersion – only the damn thermostat is fecked and if you leave it on for any time, the water boils and it sounds like it is about to explode. Puts the heart crossways in me! And the parents now have super-green solar panels and toasty hot water 24/7. One day…

Theresa, I feel your pain. I also pay the bills in my house and the most recent ESB / Gas bill was HUGE. Really gets on my nerves as there is one particular person constantly whacking the heat on at all hours. So I myself am the heating/immersion police!

I moved out of home a couple of months ago, and I have become the immersion police. It makes all the difference when it’s me paying the bills. I live with my boyfriend and two other guys, and they are lethal! lethal! for leaving the immersion on for hours. I must sound like such a nag to them, but it just gets under my skin. They are also mad for having all the lights on in the house, even though they’re cooped up in their own bedrooms x-boxing themselves to death. And they see nothing wrong with this!!!

heh heh, Kirstie you were lucky the gaff didn’t catch fire.
We had the immersion gestapo in our house too. We had no central heating during the 70′s and v. early 80′s so relied upon the immersion for hot water for baths etc.
Not only did we have the immersion police, mam put a little weeny padlock on the big black telephone in the sitting room. But maestro here discovered the art of phone tapping as a teenager.
One day at dinner my mam says to us three kids, “now I’d like to know whose been tapping the phone”. I looked at her innocently and my bro and sis looked expectantly in my direction. “Now don’t bother denying it”, continues the mammy, “Telecom Eireann rang me this morning to tell me that somebodies been tapping the phone”. The game was up. “It was me” I confessed. I got a telling off and an if you ever do this again I’ll tell your father. The next day I was over in my pals house and was telling her mother that Telecom Eireann had rang my mother to tell her the phone was being tapped. My pals mam was looking at me as if I’d 10 heads. She shook her head and told me “jays KK, for a girl whose doing honours in the leaving your not half thick. It was your brother or sister who told on ye”. Oh, right.

Howling at these comments, ladies! It’s nigh on fourteen years since I left home and I still find myself checking the hot water tank every day to see if it might need ‘a bit of a boost’.

I had to phone my da from Woodies a couple of months ago to get his advice on lagging jackets. I could hear the pride in his voice.

I told my dad earlier about reading this. Instead of him finding it hilarious I got a lecture on the expense of using the immersion! Some things never change.
