Ah yes, I have one whole separate bag dedicated to basics. In it, there is:
Mac Face and Body (still my fave after many years)
Mac Skinfinish Natural for setting for topping up)
A Benefit Browzings set (which I use with an angled liner brush)
A Liz Earle Bronzer
A blusher, usually a Mac or Bobbi Brown one.
A Too Faced Natural Palette filled with nude shades
Mac Teddy liner

I was recently surprised to discover that my absolute essentials for day to day ON A BASIC DAY was twice as big as my friend’s whole makeup bag and (I know you’ll all know what I mean) ten times as expensive.

Thanks for this! I recently discovered my own best red lipstick, which is Bobbi Brown in the colour… get this… “orange”. It is not well named, although it does hint at the orange side of red. It is the best formula for a bright lipstick I have ever tried and the shade, while quite strong, is somehow not overpowering. And it’s creamy. As for the rest of my necessities, I like YSL Touche Eclát, Max Factor 2000 Calorie mascara, MAC Eyebrows pencil, Clinique eyeshadow in Foxy (Agreed! Everyone needs a taupe shadow in their kit!) And I have a Revlon eyeliner pencil in some shade of brown that seems to glide right on – better than more expensive brands I have tried.

Now you would think at my age (ahem44) I would not only have a capsule wardrobe but a make up one too……no such luck I own products from every range and most have been a disaster in one form or another so I have decided that as and from Jan 1 I am clearing the lot and starting again now this should be fun in more ways than one Wish me Luck ladies

Wow ladies, LOVING YOUR LISTS; and yes, I’m ADDICTED to make-up bags, I had an amazing Anya Hindmarch one but it got pinched – devo is not the word. There’s fab Ted Baker ones on Asos though.

Gracie, I’m not much of a gloss person either, long hair, Irish wind and sticky lips just don’t go together!

Tori, if you can find Sally Hansen Clear Lip Gloss (usually in chemists), it’s not too sticky (though it does have a bit of menthol tingle) and I tend to only need to re-slick after a couple of hours. Not quite long-lasting, but as good as it gets with gloss I suppose!

Le Smurf, I really like Face and Body because you can build it up from day to night but I have very combination skin.

Fififinx – LOVE IT! I’m also a big fan of Inglot’s pick n’ mix palettes for brows. GenericUsername (great tag!) Inglot would probably have a shade for you.

Eileesh, palettes and kits are amazing once you love everything in them, so handy for clutches too! I’ve noticed Penney’s have some cool looking ones at the moment, but I haven’t tried them yet. Are they any use?
