Pride and Prejudice- the BBC one is the best version ever, I’ve loved it since I first saw it back in the day and have kept returning to it ever since. The Fassbender Jane Eyre was actually really good if you haven’t seen it yet and there was an adaptation of Wuthering Heights on UTV a couple of years ago with none other than Tom Hardy as Heathcliff..nom nom. Brideshead Revisited is also brilliant and I’ve recently started watching the Forsyte Saga- another UTV one, Damien Lewis (Captain Brody from Homeland) is in it but a bit of a cad. Still a ride though, obviously.

Oh god North & South is just my fav. Had never read the book, missed it on tv & ordered it a few years ago on a whim & have been hooked ever since! There’s one particular scene in it that is just so simple & at the same time heart wrenching.
I love Persuasion as well (both the BBC & UTV versions) as it seems almost more realistic in tone than other Jane Austins. That said I’ll happily sit & watch anything with her name attached.
Loved the BBC Jane Eyre as well – Toby Stephens is just yummy in it.
Has anyone seen Dangerous Beauty? It’s a film set in Venice during the time of the courtesans. Absolutely fabulous & Rufus Sewell is a little bit swoon worthy in it.
May have to put all these onto my iPad now – going away with work & know I won’t understand the TV! Period drama will keep me going!
On an aside – if you want a laugh look up youtube for “period drama hand p*rn”. It’s all the moments from period dramas where there is discreet touching of hands etc.

Pride and prejudice bbc version FTW also jane eyre is a favourite book of mine so i am rather fond of the new film, can’t turn down fassbender like. I also really have a thing for bright star, it has ben whishaw as keats. Yum. You couldn’t get me to watch a girlie love story for love nor money, but dress it in accurate period clothing [i'm a history nerd, incorrect clothes can ruin a film for me] and i’m a total sucker for it.

I feel very old. The only ‘North and South’ period drama I saw was the one with Patrick Swayze, set during the American Civil War. I learned a lot of history from it.

I also loved ‘Flambards, set around 1912, featuring an orphan who’s sent to live in the big house and falls in love with the wrong second cousin. (She’s intended for the horsy one and falls in love with the aviator instead).

I got it on Amazon recently and am waiting to see if it’s up to snuff.

Oh yes! I forgot about Brideshead Revisited! I love it too, there’s something almost hypnotic about it! I’ve seen and enjoyed everything mentioned above except North and South, will have to check it out!

Pride n Prejudice (Colin Firth) Sense n Sensibility (Emma Thompson) Persuasion Ciaran Hinds, Emma Gwyneth Paltrow, Toni Colette Juliet Stevenson, the men aren’t great in this one, and I adored the recent Cranford, since I’m a huge Judi Dench fab. I have to remind myself that I would have been below stairs, not prancing around in gowns ????

I love all period dramas . Pride & Predjuice is a classic – have both the series and the film on dvd. I saw Matthew McFaddyen in Hamleys in London with wife Keely Hawes a few months after seeing the film. I actually tripped in the door from the shock of seeing Mr Darcy in the flesh …. not my finest moment

I also wish to add my name to the North & South recommendation list, brillant series. I missed it when it was first on, caught a repeat on UK TV Gold on the auld Sky and got so addicted to it I got the DVD asap off Amazon which I break out very regularly. It’s to blame for my Richard Armitage obsession The man physcially smoulders on the screen **swoon**

I don’t like the book Jane Eyre but did enjoy both the tv adaption & film (sure with Fassbender what’s not to like )

Also check out the BBC adaption of Sense & Sensibility. Dominic Cooper plays that weasle Willoughby, David Morrisey is Colonel Brandon & Dan Steven aka Downton’s cousin Matthew is Edward Ferrars.

I’ve also got the newest Persuasion on DVD with Rupert Penry Jones, great version.

I’ve heard there is another period drama on the way about the guy who opened Selfridges in London, with Jeremy Priven as Mr Selfridge …. or did I imagine that

Maybe I’ll stop now before I show how much of a tv addict I am
